I think Jenny and John have such good chemistry, and seem great mates, and thus John's reaction as her American born close mate rings true for me. All a bit of fun. Perhaps as Jenny has spent some time in Australia, some of our ways have rubbed off on her. It seems very akin to Aussie humour to me.

great story mate. I was thinking the same thing. I think I'd rather go exploring on foot myself. But then hearing how the 三轮车人 can give you the history as well, I thought maybe you'd get some insider stuff not in the travel guides, and came to the conclusion I'd probably do both. Also, you may have been lucky to be invited in to someones home [ ok, not lucky, but we don't all have your charming personality mate] , but I think some tours take you into a home.

siyi,

I have also briefly had this experience so I know what you mean [it was early high school French for me too]. I initially have to make a much more conscious effort to think/ speak in French than prior to learning Chinese. Feels like flicking a switch. Otherwise I start coming out with ni instead of tu, hehe. Weird, huh?

John commented in the podcast that the hutongs are disappearing, which is common knowledge I think, but then went on to suggest getting to Beijing quick before they're gone. I was a little surprised at this as I presumed that some would be protected, and I just found an article that mentions that some are protected. I guess the issue remains though that some worth seeing are still disappearing, how many protected hutongs are there [and if the number is small, how crowded will it be, how touristy/non authentic may it become] and will such protection be repealed under the constant pressure of progress.

What I love is John's uncanny knack of anticipating and answering some very good questions in the podcasts, and injecting some humour at the same time, such as "so you're riding in this little bike thing/ tricycle thing, that counts as 逛?" Very useful having these new words fleshed out to see how else they can be applied. No further questions.Thankyou.

呵呵,对,有些奇怪呀。当然在英文是:

“All his life has he looked away... to the future, to the horizon”。。。from:

“Ready are you? What know you of ready? For eight hundred years have I trained Jedi. My own counsel will I keep on who is to be trained. A Jedi must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind. This one a long time have I watched. All his life has he looked away... to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing. Hmph. Adventure. Heh. Excitement. Heh. A Jedi craves not these things. You are reckless.”
