October 23, 2010 at 1:04 AMbtw , yeah, I got that sense of 令人觉得很奇怪的 which is what I thought it originally meant...in this case referring to an astonishing/strange/bewildering phenomenon
with 差异 I thought ren could be referring to the bairen themselves and saying that it had given them a very different appearance [ they were feigning something they're not]....there was also a remote other possibility that it was talking about a difference of opinion...controversial

0：09...I wondered about 诧异 as well, but I think it might be 差异 as cha sounds first tone to me and I think it makes more sense...though 诧异 makes some sense also and you may be right.

I've heard about this "'discuss the fare' first " going awry at the fork out time usually by a factor of 10 put down to "miscommunication"..ie you tingcuo le [you misheard]. Lacking good enough Chinese to be convincing in standing your ground about what was verbally agreed upon [as they will no doubt attribute the discrepancy to your non native zhongwen status] , zenme ban? I guess one could try writing it down?
