October 17, 2010 at 1:26 AM罐 [jar or pot]。。a 24 stroke character in a Newbie lesson. Jiayou! ..but actually it's pretty simple when you learn to break them down:
缶 is the radical here and gives the character it's meaning...it means jar and is meant to be a pictographic representation of a jar.
雚 means heron but it is the phonetic here so does not contribute this meaning but rather the guan sound. Breaking down this character is interesting as 隹 is a short-tailed bird, and add in 艹 the grass radical [ I'm not sure if this is meant to refer to the egrets..brush..long filamentous feathers or not] and you have an egret 雈. If you then throw in 吅 representing the noise made by a lot of mouths 口 and you have the closely related heron 雚
