wshoey,

dunno how many kids use chinesepod but I'm under the impression the number is not insignificant. There only seem to be a smallish number that ever comment on the boards but I believe some schools are either taking it up or recommending it to their students. I believe CPod is also making a push recently to connect more with schools.

If you click on the community section, and then click on team, you will see former member Matt C. He wrote a whole book on this subject you're interested in. I think it can be ordered online too. Some other poddies may have the details to hand. In the interim there is a wikipedia article on the subject that has quite a number of entries.

a couple of comedians here in Australia [Hamish and Andy] recently did a skit where they had this girl that had a voice very much like the sort of voice used in phone recordings call up this fellow posing as an a trial of automated voting in the recent election here. The "recording" then kept confirming for the party that he hadn't voted for, and the guy was getting very frustrated, giving his vote louder and clearer, till in the end the girl said something a little unlikely to be heard from such a recording. The jig was soon up, hehe.

thanks toianw, that's really interesting. Quite some time ago I started to look into the voice recognition software that comes with windows for ease of access but I didn't manage to get it up and running in Chinese. I think there was less of it in the later versions of windows. I'd love to have it on my mobile though.

我猜上面的用户的爱好可能是一个兼职间谍,对吧。

I'd like to hazard a guess the above poddie's hobby might be moonlighting as a spy, right. Fancy using the CPod boards as a channel of communication for his contacts, hehe.

Well I've only listened once while driving and was a bit distracted, but was it meant to be the case that the whole telephone reservation was automated? If not, is there such automated services in China where they use voice recognition? What with tones and homophones that's pretty impressive. Also sounds like fun to practice your Chinese and see what you end up booking, hehe.
