October 30, 2010 at 9:15 PMwell spotted mate. Your comment made me notice that Volks is similar to the English "folks" [and wagen is obviously like wagon], so I just looked up the german for volks...and yeah, it means people. I noticed the other day that dazhong means "the masses" or the bulk of the population.

October 30, 2010 at 7:45 AMoh sorry mate. You've caught me out...I usually read all the posts but didn't this time as I haven't studied this lesson. I only became interested when the debate was on, and started to listen as far as the word in question which sounded like the right tones to me [ not that I"m too solid on those tones, hehe ]. I see your post now. I didn't realise it was a borrow word. Well done. I guess I was just being literal and loved the way it was being represented in the avatar.

October 30, 2010 at 6:25 AMWhat worst in you? I only ever see the good side, but maybe that's why we're only seeing half of you in your avatar, hehe.

October 30, 2010 at 5:12 AMOne good thing about a thread like this is it's a bit like a reunion. It's nice to see a couple of old faces around. :)

October 30, 2010 at 5:09 AMwell there are different ways of learning of course. It's not all about role models. Sometimes it's about self knowledge and crystallising what we don't want to be like. eg if you see intolerance and chose tolerance. Do we tolerate intolerance though? hehe

October 30, 2010 at 2:57 AMYou know I love a good debate, but I hate to see it being a bit uneven. I personally can't agree with you, but there was a poddie, themainman who seemed very likeminded . It's just a hunch but I reckon you could be great mates and he could come and back you up. Why don't you PM him and see what he has to say?

October 31, 2010 at 3:42 AMpaul,
I haven't listened to confirm if it's the case here, but sometimes these supplementary vocab words aren't related to the topic as you point out, but rather are taken from the podcast discussion to help folk who are struggling to follow the banter. At least that's my impression and my guess at what's happening here.
edit...hang on, I've just noticed this is an Ellie and not Intermediate or above. I have a feeling they still threw in the odd bit of Chinese in the Ellie discussions on occasion, but I may well be wrong. I know what I said above applies to Intermediate and above anyway.
