I see these connections all the time, and I often wonder which ones are conscious, which ones are subconscious, and what is pure coincidence [probably not much of the latter]. Yeah, you've particularly gotta wonder in this case. Are they going to tell us or are we just meant to infer it?

I would take it that it's from the aspiration and the action of the p sound..the sudden small jet of air on parting your lips, as you say in relation to the microphone. I worded my question poorly...I guess I just wanted confirmation that this is what was meant be the popping [the small jet of air hitting the microphone] and what I really wanted was a bit of expansion on how this p is muffled and still remains a p. I guess just a little less of a jet of air/ turning away slightly/directing the jet slightly to the side. The other reason I was trying to draw comment was because I found it interesting as it must be a slight dilemna..a language teaching site trying to teach correct pronunciation but at the same time having to muffle a sound to avoid the assault on our ears. I guess it's just fine tuning, but I thought it was interesting.

I think everyone should have a crack at solving these cases on their own, post what they reckon, and then look at what others have said. 撒盐 is the first thing to come up under sougou pinyin ime for sayan. This 撒 which I take as "scatter" doesn't sound as bad as the english "rubbing"...you know, really getting in there and grinding that salt deep into the wound. Love hurts you know.....this scattering of salt sounds way too gentle for mine [and also how much salt is really going to actually go in the wound if you're scattering it about like that, all wasteful like?..it might miss!]....sounds like sprinkling fairy dust..might even be nice like. Just look at this lessons avatar...he's had no scattering of salt let me tell you...he's in real pain..that salt has been rubbed right in there, deep, really deep.

June 26, 2011 at 5:39 AMI thought the left side was meant to be 女 but while I recognised the second stroke of 马 was in there, I wasn't sure what the whole right side was meant to be. I presumed that it was traditional tricking me up. I thought it was going to be something along the lines of mother. Thanks for clarifying. This brings up a question though. I think most of my tools are for simplified characters...what's the best way for looking up traditional characters?
