June 21, 2011 at 1:51 PMI'm obviously not the best qualified, but while you're waiting for a better response I'll have a stab at what I make of it. [I've read the linked to article but I haven't listened to the podcast yet, so this part may have been discussed there]. Anyhow, fwiw, here goes:
He's at a loss to explain to everybody because it's impossible to say how much todays outcome [indicating the decision to run off and elope] is the result of the dreams of the younger generation, how much is due to working like a dog day and night struggling to survive, and at the same time his peers around him act like everyone has the same ideals, the same goals as if everyone is the same and then suddenly Wang gong quan emerges from their midst to renounce fame and fortune, that is to say at once renounces mainstream Chinese societies values, namely wealth, power, fame and position.
I've steered a bit further from the literal than I usually do, but anyhow, I think that's the gist of it. I hope there's something of use here, but that you also get a better answer. :)

June 21, 2011 at 12:43 AMspeaking of which, don't you find it a little freaky when you're on gmail and then an ad appears about something you're discussing. Is there an equivalent expression to "Big Brother" in Chinese? surely not simply 大哥哥?
ps am I right in thinking there is a way to turn off this "tailoring" for want of a better word? how about the ads?

June 23, 2011 at 2:56 AM我觉得在李探长的办公桌的抽屉里有一个照片。什么照片呢？ 真可惜。。我觉得这张照片有他的儿子上，而这个儿子已去世了几十年以前，所以解释为什么他还穿这种的过时衣服，而老是看看孩子踢球【他的儿子爱好】。
