July 17, 2011 at 3:50 PMJohn dropped a clue to this case in a more recent lesson, the having spare keys made lesson. He randomly threw in something about "laser security door systems. I reckon that magician could do some pretty nifty things cracking laser locks. What was all that smoke about after all?..interfering with the laser beam, smoke and mirror style? His hot little fingers were so hot they were smokin' [and thus deforming his natural finger prints]...

July 17, 2011 at 12:14 PMhaha, I haven't had a chance to read all of Zhen's contribution to our collabo story, but if these elements haven't been worked in then they'll definitely have to be at some point if we want to keep it credible and not sadly lacking ;)

July 16, 2011 at 6:27 AMThe usual proviso's...this is just my opinion, but I think:
我迟到了 ..means I have arrived late. The le here indicates that the action [of arriving late] is completed
我会迟到了...means I will arrive late. The 会 gives us the "will"...it's going to happen...and the 了 here I think indicates a change of state. Previously the person was going to/or had intended to arrive on time, but there's been a traffic jam or something and now they're going to arrive late. I would guess that you could say 我会迟到 without the 了 if say you're invited to a party at 6 pm on a Friday night, but you know when you get the invite that you'll be working till 6:30pm and so from the outset you know you're dying to go to the party but it's always going to be after work..always going to be arriving late. I'm not certain though.
I'd be very happy to be corrected.

July 15, 2011 at 6:28 PM"I also wasn't thinking these stickers are messages meant for the driver right behind you"
really? I was going to ask who you thought it was for then, but looking again, as we'd interpreted it is someone flying past, I guess you're saying it could be the person in the next lane overtaking. I would generally think of them for being for the person behind you primarily as they're in the best position to read them, and then some are just general announcements for anyone within reading distance. But I can see why in the context of this message and the way we interpreted it that yeah, it could be for the car in the next lane overtaking...that would have made sense if we'd been right in our interpretation...that's what you meant right?

July 17, 2011 at 3:53 PM...alternatively, the lesson title itself...having spare keys made could be a clue in itself...perhaps the gatekeeper had a spare key. Maybe the fingerprints were a red herring...they were left over from some other occasion when the boss had lured some poor innocent back to show her his big fancy diamond...the type that thinks that diamonds are a girls best friend ;) Perhaps the gatekeepers parrot is singing a different tune now that it's got a diamond stuck in it's throat. Perhaps it's cheekily even humming the James Bond "diamonds are forever" theme.
