So if they buy the 吸尘器 and it also can't rectify the 家里都是毛 situation, could you then say 吸不干净 instead of 扫不干净?

btw, just my observation, but I seem to have noticed that here in Australia carpet is not as popular as it was 30 years ago. Polished wooden floors and tiles seem more popular. Not sure how much this is just a fashion thing, but I think cleaning difficulties and allergies come into it for some at least. But that's just my impression.

I meant to add that I guess such a kinship term can extend to the families pet, 是不是?

阿黄。。。interesting name. Yeah, I was noting the almost yellow colour of 阿黄's 毛 in the lesson avatar. Interestingly 黄 can mean "to fall through" ...so maybe shedding hair was his destiny

The 阿 part is also interesting ...prefix used before monosyllabic names [which this applies in this case] , but also is a kinship term indicating familiarity

"汉子" ...man

...the man in the advanced vocab list is very useful

think you meant to type 汉字。。。。but I wouldn't use that here...it really just refers to the characters as I understand it...I'd tend to use 生词

ok, so some words were neutral , some words were 含蓄, but wondering if there are words that are impolite. I gather the last 2 words were pretty 土 ,don't know if they qualified for being impolite though.

茅坑...very useful word. If I get a chance to go to China again I definitely want to get out in the 农村。Interesting word, the 坑 makes sense...pit , but wondering about the 茅 part...reeds....is that because reeds grow in the pit or are reeds used as defacto toilet paper, or some other reason?

I don't think of WC as impolite in any way, but it is seldom used in Australia, seems old fashioned, possibly more used in the past and seems euphemistic if anything esp compared to say dunny

“Re "the staff will help you . . ." I guess that sort of defeats the purpose of saving labor cost”

。。。I love self checkout and use it all the time. I don't agree it defeats the purpose, as mostly it is self explanatory, and usually if someone needs to be shown something it is only how to scan one item, not the lot, so you only need one staff member to multiple self checkouts , not a one to one ratio as in the traditional checkout situation. And yes, as you suggest, as folk are trained, there is even less need for that one staff member. I presume the security cameras take care of keeping folk honest.
