must say, I was inclined to agree with bodawei [everyone does this stereotyping ] but then you've come along and made a very good case, and I suspect you've hit the nail on the head with:

"There's an earnestness about the strereotype"

..though of course, I think there are still many [probably more so among the less well educated] in our societies who are earnest enough in their stereotyping.

I suspect that despite your comment:

"despite the astonishing amount of foreign engagement China now has"

..that it's still relatively early days, it takes time for mindsets to change, and I also think large sections of Chinese society still have very little in the way of contact with foreigners...don't they still call out "laowai" if they see a foreigner in rural areas? [hehe, I must get there before that dies out]. So I think bodawei's point:

"because we generally know more about these cultures than they do"

..was a good one. I think to a large extent as really you're both suggesting, it comes down to exposure.

"A search for {"the Switzerland of"} turns up 34,400 hits"

Man, just did a google search of "the Australia of" and it kept wanting me to look for "the Australian of"...anyhow nothing geographical seemed to turn up under the former which I guess just goes to show 我们澳大利亚人都很有个性

Just realised I said "particularly" with that spelling which was a bad choice of words. What I meant was jiushi nage spelling [ "Jack"]

when I first saw the lesson title, I thought this would get the comments flowing, hehe. I wonder if this will be one of the biggest lesson threads of the year. We haven't even gotten onto many other nationalities yet.

For those looking to bridge the gap between Ellie and Intermediate, I can recommend this lesson. It would be one of the easiest Intermediates I've seen.
