August 27, 2007 at 3:29 PMmariama To start off with, try smiling when saying "ren2" or "re4" or any Mandarin word starting with "r" and that might do it. The western "r" is produced with the lips rounded, as if placing them around a fat straw. The tongue is placed just about the same place as the English "r" (not terribly rolled back), or maybe even a little tiny bit forward. But, the big difference is the lack of rounding of the lips. Once you are used to making the sound, then you don't need to smile to pronounce it properly. Perhaps the academic team can confirm or correct, but this is how I've explained it to others.

August 24, 2007 at 5:10 AMThanks man2toe. I recognize 故鄉 gu4xiang4 as a formal term; I would never have thought of the word spontaneously. I usually say "我出生在台灣“ wo3chu1sheng1zai4tai2wan1, or "我是台灣出生的“ wo3shi4tai2wan1chu1sheng1de"

August 24, 2007 at 2:57 AM我的老家是三峽台灣 Wo3delao3jia1shi4san1xia2tai2wan1 我爸爸是Hunan人 wo3ba4ba shi4hu2nan2ren2 我媽媽是台灣人 wo3ma1ma shi4tai2wan1ren2 I don't recall hearing this term 老家 lao3jia1 before. I'd usually say I was born in or came from Taiwan. Is this a regional difference in language or is it due to my elementary level of Mandarin?
