I'm no academic, but because I am originally from Taiwan (immigrated as a child,) I've always been able to id mainland Chinese citizens by a few things: neutralizing the reduplicated word, the "r-ing" at the end of sentences, the "speaking w/marbles in their mouth" speech pattern, the thickened s/sh, z/zh...etc.
