The News and Features podcast was a later addition to ChinesePod. The one you see that is dated May 19, 2005 was backdated since it was meant to be a 'welcome' podcast for new users. The first one was really the one on June 19, 2007. Sorry for the confusion! :D

这两年 (Zhè liǎng nián) and 这四个月 (Zhè sì ge yuè) can both be used, yes. And true, when you use 这两... (Zhè liǎng...) it is more general, as in our 'couple of...'

由 (subject) 来 + V
This pattern is used to express that an action is to be done by someone. The 由 (yóu) can be omitted, or alternatively, the 来 (lái) can be left out too:
由他来做。Yóu tā lái zuò.
由他做。Yóu tā zuò.
他来做。Tā lái zuò.
The meaning is the same.
