August 9, 2012 at 10:52 PMerp. In my earlier message 那张女孩子 should be 那种女孩子。Typo, I do know the difference. :-)
They say that when you use the wrong measure word it brings up a funny image and that's definitely the case here. Sounds like the guy likes a girl from a 2-dimensional universe.

August 9, 2012 at 8:42 PMBecause San Fran Bay region has a higher density of geeks than other U.S. regions?
I'll allow it. :-) Tho' Geekdom is a nation with open borders.

August 9, 2012 at 7:50 PM这个彩铃也让我微笑了。 Stop -- Hammer time!
Tal -- here's a potential new ringtone for you to help combat the misperception that you're an American (based on your spelling). I know you can't see YouTube, and I suppose Vimeo is also blocked for you? I found a link from Youku but I can't get anything from there to play on my computer, so I can't validate this link works or is correct. So, um, good luck.

August 9, 2012 at 6:56 PMRJ, 感谢你有助于解释。
I begin to despair that I'm capable of saying anything in my native English that doesn't require a lookup to Urban Dictionary or Wikipedia -- how intellectually provincial of me! 真土!At least I admitted to being a dork up front this time. Another good reminder for me to speak more Chinese.

August 9, 2012 at 6:11 PM我觉得现任女友太爱妒忌。也是有点儿疯狂的。
看起来这两个女人都是点儿疯狂的。提醒大家一下这个对话的引言说,这个男人特别喜欢那张女孩子。

August 9, 2012 at 12:52 AMChris and Baba -- thanks for adding the clarifications. About 10 minutes after I posted I realized that very little of that joke would translate for anyone who didn't follow the Mars landing. Everybody is so friendly here that I forget you may not all share my identical nerdy interests.
And since nothing makes a joke funnier than the teller herself explaining it (NO EXCEPTIONS): another part of the joke is comparison to the teenagers' kissing game, Seven Minutes in Heaven.
Current events, nerditry, and a predatory sexual proposition from an older woman. It's a joke that has everything, really.

August 8, 2012 at 11:21 PMRJ and zhenlijiang -- at risk of burning any goodwill I've tried to earn back, one could point to a momentary thought I coulda maybe sorta had watching the runup to the Mars landing this weekend:
'Hey NASA mohawk guy , if you really want to experience 'Seven Minutes of Terror,' meet me in the supply closet in 10.'
That would maybe be an example of crossing the line :-)
