Sorry. To be clear, the return something and bike rental were two different transactions.

During my visit, I was able to return something with a little insistence, but the receipt was absolutely necessary. I rented a bike from a private citizen and got a receipt for fee plus deposit. When I got back without the receipt, the person was stunned. Of course, she gave me my deposit back, but her expression told me just how important receipts are there.

Could 'qiantian gang mai le' be considered repetitive or is it ok use as an English speaker could say 'I just bought it two days ago'?

My friend's parents had her brother in China then her after arriving in US. They told her brother that he was 'made in China' and her 'made in America'. They had a usually-playful rivalry on that and didn't ask the 'how' for a long time. Pretty clever.

Bazza- My guess- because the cubes likely wouldn't have been from boiled water. They don't do ice cubes anyway (at least where I went). Sodas or beer are chilled, and water is served warm (after boiled).

When I was in Beijing, I saw gu4ding4 dianhua for customer (paid) use in all convenience stores. Does that mean many people do not have land lines in their homes? If so, because of affordability?

I'll be happy to be the Washington representative in properly ordering Tsing Tao beer ;-)

All the intermediates make some valuable points and suggestions, but that doesn't mean that the ellies should 'get over it'. As John mentioned, the 'gap' thing comes up time and time. Doesn't that count for something?
