I would really be interested in learning more about the Chinese legal and criminal justice system, including if and how foreigners are treated differently. In this case I have learned more from the commenters than the lesson. (thanks guys) More legal lessons would be nice - perhaps at an upper intermediate or intermediate level.

Catherine,

"Spice drunk" - I know exactly what you mean, and it feels so good. Your mouth gets just-right numb as well as your scalp, and every hair on your head stands on end as a wonderful mild glow takes over your whole body. Add a couple of beers as you savor the flavor and its heaven. Spice drunk it is.

Just beware the peppercorns hiding in the next bite.

In the case of 我骑车, zai is still referring to a location, it is just a location in time (now). I found zai much easier to understand once I learned to look at it as a location in time or space.

我们喜欢金针菇, 鹌鹑蛋,生菜,特级雪花肥牛,和 辣汤锅。

(Wǒmen xǐhuan jīnzhēngū, ānchun dàn, shēngcài, tèjí xuěhuā féi niú, hé là tāng guō.)

We like enoki muchrooms, quail eggs, lettuce, and prime snowflake beef with very spicy cooking soup. Ordering without a translator is a great exercise. We also cook hot pot at home now (including last night). Im sure I must have a chronic case of 上火。 So be it.

Perhaps Chinese beer is the antidote. Seems to work for me :-)

Hi Paul,

I'll take your "p.s." one step further:

Thank God for the banter back and forth. I think its a wonderful atomosphere they create to make learning more fun. And who speaks perfect Chinese? News anchor people on CCTV? I am a native English speaker and I dont speak "perfect" English. I speak "real" English, and I want to learn "real" Chinese, whatever that entails, not some sterile textbook version. Yes you need native speakers involved, but we have that. The balance is perfect if you ask me and it intensifies as you move through the various levels. A good system.

And to those that dont agree, remember:
Connie is now packing Heat  :-)

Jason,

Ah, thanks. Eat "warm" food in the winter kind of thing. I love Hot Pot. Why do you think there are no Hot Pot restaurants in the US? I wonder if its a legal liability thing, or just that there is no percieved demand.
