You tell him teach. hehe, I swear I had an elementary school flashback when I read this. I mean that in a good way. I remember every one of my elementary teachers and I loved them all.

Since this was not the first of these attacks in China, I do think it is quite relevant as we search for a root cause. The weapon of choice may be irrelevant. Had our bad guy driven his car through 50 children as they left school would we be discussing car control? Obviously the US story is popular in China because it seems to validate gun control. Dont get me wrong, I dont know the answer, and Im not necessarily opposed to some form of gun control, but facts are facts. I am in favor of freedom of the press however, but with China we must be patient.

I had no idea that tipping was also new to the UK. Nor can I imagine Brits not able to complain. As for the soup thing, having tasted British food, I think is a good idea :-) Although if pressed to define American food, I would be at a loss.

Hi Guolan

People tend to be both good and bad. Some leaning toward the good and others more to the bad. Power is a temptress that brings out the bad in some, and insuring they are not the only ones with guns keeps them in check, or so the theory goes. I did get his connection, but I was pointing out that tipping does not result in mass confusion nor is it the wild west over here. Tipping is a rather public display of goodness and on a very small scale. Most people are capable of being inherently good in this context but it only takes a few with power and guns to threaten social order.

I think you are making this more complex than it needs to be. I tip 10 - 15% unless Im impressed, at which point I tip more. If service is bad I leave nothing. That rarely happens.

Contrary to what you must think, few people casually carry guns, and if you do, you lose the luxury of allowing yourself to become angry. Carrying a gun comes with responsibility so weighty, that most find it debilitating.

Guns are only sexy in the movies. Shame on Hollywood.

Hi Rich, thank you, and thank you again Vera. I had a business call this morning from Shanghai so when we were finished I asked about showers. According to my friend, who is a native Chinese speaker, xuan niu is not common Chinese. He seemed mystified as to why I would need a separate word for this and suggested it is all just longtou. I think we need a detailed lesson on showers as I am still unconvinced that I have the whole story here :-

Hi Vera,

actually nob should have been spelled knob by SP. This is the part of the shower that you 拧开 to turn on the water. Is this called longtou?

I dont know how Al feels about Brits, but he can connect anything at all to global warming. Your linked solution might work, they have used similar tricks for financial issues and unemployment rates. :-
