Licha,

By choosing to not study characters(spelled with an h btw) you have chosen to be functionally illiterate(in Chinese). I disagree with you, I think you should be committed.

bodawei,

yep, Bill is right. you know when you visit a strangers house and their little dog starts trying to mate with your leg? Thats humping. (Who said dogs  were smart?)

I love learning "Australian". Ive got to get over there one day. Get me some of that Roo head that Miantiao is always going on about. I hope he's talking about a meal. Actually I cant eat anything that watches me. But the Roos are interesting at any rate.

Vik, on the "me" page about half way down on the right there is a section called "my archive". If you have marked these lessons as "studied", there is a list there which will be separated by level. Click on the little red number that shows how many lessons you have at that level in the archive and it will take you there.

"IMO, farmed livestocks have no inherent rights because they are purely a human creation. They would not have existed if humans did not create them for food. Non-existing things have no rights, and because we bestow them their existence, its up to us to give them whatever rights, if any."

I cant let you get away with such a bizzare statement. I cant create animals and Im guessing neither can you. By this reasoning your children wouldnt have any inherent rights either. By your reasoning people could be "created" to be slaves and this would be just fine. Not true. To me the question is about sentience. If a being is sentient then we shouldnt slaughter and eat. This I think is why its harder for some to eat dog, it seems at least, that they can think and feel. Cows are pretty spacy. Kind of like plants with feet. :-)

@kesirui

Never meat? Wow. A "meat virgin". Im  guessing your parents were vegetarians?

Pete,

"busted my hump". Of course I know what it means, but I would never say this. Frankly, it sounds stupid. Hump is a euphemism for what I would say, and I do wonder if there are any more colorful expressions in Chinese that are used to mean the same?

As for the translation, at least put the literal in the roll-over. To not do so, I believe, is just stubborness on your part. Why this penchant for such non-elagant phrases? Maybe there is some medication for this :-) Its not a big deal but somebody needs to ruffle your feathers. Ah, there's one you can use. Take care.

I like that approach.

I did visit several vegetarian restaurants during my last trip to Shanghai in Feb. They were quite good actually and all make an effort to mimic meat and fish dishes without using meat and fish of course. I tend to avoid red meat and have thought many times about becoming a vegetarian. Still thinking about it, but I dont think it should be a religion. If I dont eat meat for weeks and decide to eat one meat dish its not a sin, and Im not poisoned, Im still eating virtually no meat. A good personel health choice perhaps and believe it or not I dont relish the idea of caged animals being raised for food. The waste and impact on the environment I dont think is widely understood but one person not eating meat will only result in your portion being thrown away. My son works in a meat dept during summer breaks from school. Once meat starts to loose its color they throw it away. Its still plenty good but for fear of any liability they will not give it away, not even to the employees. The dumpsters actually have locks on them.
