April 28, 2009 at 8:51 PMChuck - it does look that way but I think the bend is misleading. Her leg is up on the desk and some of the black shadow at the edge is not leg. It has to bend the other way otherwise where is the other leg?

April 28, 2009 at 9:19 AM宫保鸡丁 - One of my favorite dishes, although my Chinese friends are unimpressed by it because it is so "common". I love it, and the spicier the better. The Chinese tend to be whimps when it comes to spicy. They never want to believe me when I say zhong4 la. Then they watch for the tears but all they get are complaints from me that its only wei la. Spicy food should make your scalp numb, so you can feel each individual hair standing on end. Then you know you are alive. That with a cold one and you are in heaven. All you need is good company.
Matt - thanks for the history.

April 27, 2009 at 12:18 PMrecyclebin,
why would you want to limit yourself to speaking what is understood only in the SH area? People in SH all also speak mandarin, which will serve you well in all of China.
Here is a taste of Shanghainese

there are no full blown websites that I know of to learn this local dialect. Im sure there are books, but maybe Pete has some recommendations.

我想要读此。 有没有一个英文译文?
可能不应该认真采取这本书?

April 26, 2009 at 2:35 PMI recently spent a night in Jinan Shandong and we had to try the sweet and sour carp, better known as the "standing fish". It looks more like petrified fish and the one we had stood large and tall compared to this picture but I had left my camera at the hotel. Ugliest fish I have ever seen, but the darn thing was really good, believe it or not.
