October 22, 2013 at 8:21 PMOkay, flipping through Niubi!, I finally found "鸭子" as "male prostitute." But I lack the imagination to figure out what the full term would mean.
On a technical note, why is it no longer possible to edit or delete comments? That was a very useful feature.

October 22, 2013 at 8:02 PMWell, in the discussion the hosts suggested coming to the web to ask John what this other meaning of 旱鸭子 is. So here I ask: What is the slang meaning of 旱鸭子 hinted at in the lesson?

October 20, 2013 at 8:48 PMInteresting. I looked at that page you linked me. Some of the written language is a little hard for me to parse, but I get the general gist. Whereas Chinesepod uses different traditional characters for 尽早 and 尽快, the link you sent me uses 儘 for both of them. Their distinction of 儘 for emphasizing effort and 盡 for emphasizing extent is interesting, though this too does not correspond with Chinesepod's use of characters. They also do not touch on the "even though" meaning of 尽管.
Thank you again for the link.
I would be very interested to Chinesepod staff's take on this issue.

October 20, 2013 at 8:23 PMAt around 11:55, David says that people go to Confucian temples to plead 考试过关. What is the difference, regarding passing exams, between 过关 and 及格?

October 20, 2013 at 7:17 PMDarkstar94, Look again at the examples I cite. There is no tonal consistency between the two forms as written in the transcript.

October 19, 2013 at 8:12 PMOne thing that wasn't discussed in this lesson is how to tell the difference between 盡 and 儘. Looking through the vocabulary, they seem to be totally random. 盡早 but 儘快; 盡力 but 儘全力 and 盡情.
Is there any kind of rule? Can anyone explain this?
