I don't make some of the horrendous mistakes I used to, and often I 'see' them now. Not that it helps with the 'gals that much more though. See below. (I think they are somewhat interchangeable, although 'dong' is you don't get it and more casual, and 'liao jie' implies the subject requires some deep analysis and reflection to understand, topics like China and love!) Okay, I'm with the program. :) You made me look up "shi1lian4" 失恋 a verb meaning unrequited love. Exactly the kind of motivation this lazy student needs. April 27, 2007 at 4:10 AMPics - Can you add back the hanzi for the photos/image that accompanies each lesson. I learned quite a few hanzi just from seeing them each day. There are over 400 podcasts, which would be exposure to 400 hanzi. 'Zhang Liang' didn't look very broken-hearted in it.

April 26, 2007 at 5:50 AMJUST POLITE or CIVILIZED ? - I just did a Cpod search on wen ming and got no lesson results. Could I submit for an upcoming lesson some usages of this phrase. It's almost a high-frequency word in my mind, and has been coming up a lot in conversations. In English the direct translation 'civilized' or 'cultured' is almost an insult if applied or not applied to someone. I don't get this feeling though from Chinese. Not sure if that feeling is correct though. I think an idiomatic translation seems to be 'polite'. Here's some examples from an article I'm reading and also a sign I saw at a local eatery. 您是文明人请不要随地吐痰 使后请冲水 请安静 "不文明"的中国人

April 26, 2007 at 5:34 AMCHILLY or HOT - Any tips on the various words for cold and hot. Specifically some examples of 'wrong' applications. For example I think I can say 'dong' kafei but not 'dong' shui. Right? 冰 bing 凉 liang 冬 dong ka fei 咖啡 热 re shui 汤 tang shui 泡 ? bao shui Unfortunately in my mind they all revert to just cold or hot in English, much like there's one 'can do' in English but various variations in Chinese (neng, hui, keyi). And I'm still not sure if people are correcting my choice or just saying back a different version to 'verify' what I'm saying. For example, I say "I'd like a cold coffee" "bing kafei" and they reply "dong de", and I go 'dui dong de'. Man2toe, I think you need a verb after that 'zai'. 再来 Although verbs often get dropped in speech, to my ear this seems to need one. Let's see what Amber says.

Now there's a word I'd like to know in Chinese, how do I say 'spiffy'? 特别好, 挺好,有趣得, 很好...don't seem to me to have much 'spiffy' in 'em. ??
