For "which meaning of eat tofu" are you trying to say "What's tofu mean?" You can translate this as: "吃豆腐"是什么意思? And, yes, you are correct about the meaning of 吃软不吃硬.

The free subscription is very limited. You can't store up your vocab, and, if you're a visual learner like me, the pdf transcripts are invaluable.

changye, Is 'A' by Japanese the same as Chinese Classical Chinese? I've decided that Japanese will be my 3rd language. I'm just very paranoid about starting without being immersed in the environment as I don't want to develop an overtly foreign accent.

@ sputnik I don't think you sound 没文化 whatsoever. Classical Chinese is very difficult even for the Chinese. It's like reading Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" in the original Old English, but worse (or so I hear)!

changye, as always, provides a very insightful comment. I've never thought of all these characters having that type of impact / effect. My colleagues are always saying how they can't ever get into 红楼梦 or the others because they're too difficult. How many Chinese can really read the classics? They can't be that difficult, can they? And if so, what hope is there for us foreigners? changye, is classical Japanese literature just as difficult?
