"我还差的远呢." is a common phrase used to "deflect praise", as John put it some time ago.

Chinese is difficult for many westerners in the beginning. Stick with it and get as much practice as you can with your teachers and you'll do just fine. CPod will also give you a big boost. =) gogo加油!

Well, there is that really strange sound at the very end of the dialogue that sounds like a UFO landing...

In some cities (all of China?) it's mandatory that foreigners living/working in China register with the police within 48 hours of arrival.

@ user28818 and ewilc773 The first sentence 你今天晚上优势吗 translates to "Do you have superiority tonight?" I think you mistyped 有事 as 优势. However, no matter whether the 你 is placed before or after the 今天晚上 the meaning is the same. Although the former seems to be the most common 说法.

我的爱好是写诗歌. Actually means, "My hobby is writing poetry." Perhaps the best way to say "I enjoy writing poetry." would be 我很享受写诗歌的过程 which actually translates to "I enjoy the process of writing poetry."

At the height of the Ming dynasty, China was the most advanced nation-state on the planet. Perhaps one reason why it failed to advance alongside its western counterparts can be attributed to its unwillingness to open up. That, coupled with its defeat in the Opium Wars and the rape that proceeded not only kept the people preoccupied trying to quell civil turmoil but also fostered a strong feeling of xenophobia that might have further perpetuated a disregard for anything foreign. Although, ironically, it was also after its defeat in the Opium Wars that China started to send students abroad to learn from the west, particularly Japan. Really, China, economically and ideologically, has only been developing within a "western/modern" model for the past 30 some odd years. Oh, and I heard that the Arab states actually invented printing. Anyone know whether or not that's true?

Ah, then you could say: 你想说什么"吃豆腐"的意思? Sorry about the confusion.
