June 20, 2007 at 1:36 AMkwam, No problem; that's what we're here for. In this case there's an unspoken "if... then." Taken, literally, the sentence means, "Don't take this road take which road?" After adding in the unspoken "if... then," we get "[If] don't take this road, [then] take which road?" So the natural English translation would be something like, "If I don't take this road, what road am I supposed to take?"

June 19, 2007 at 2:27 AMkwam, In this case 不会胡说的 means "I wouldn't just make stuff up." He's defending what he said. I hope that clears it up!

June 19, 2007 at 2:26 AMHere are the links Changye mentions: 北瓜, 东瓜 I had never heard of 北瓜 (běiguā), and I suspect that 东瓜 (dōngguā) is just a typo for 冬瓜 (dōngguā). I eat 冬瓜 (dōngguā), AKA "winter melon" all the time. It makes great soup!

June 19, 2007 at 1:20 AMSorry, I had the day off yesterday. Interesting comments about my voice here! It's something I hadn't really noticed. I had thought that I was low key in both English and Chinese, but could it be more pronounced in Chinese? I am honestly not sure about this... Maybe Jenny can give her opinion, since I talk to her a lot in both English and Chinese, on and off the show. As for quality, I agree with everything everyone said here. We must improve the consistency and the quality of all aspects of the service (not just the lessons). I have just returned from vacation, and I'll be working hard to do just that!

June 13, 2007 at 5:41 AMtriplelatte, "Wuss" doesn't have an exact translation in Mandarin. You could use one of the following expressions: 胆小鬼 (dǎnxiǎoguǐ) - coward or scaredy-cat 没用 (méiyòng) - to be useless (meaning someone won't do what needs to be done) 窝囊 (wōnang) - to be good for nothing (similar to above)

June 22, 2007 at 8:17 AMFu Dawei and AuntySue, Aric's original intro will always have a special place in ChinesePod audio history, but if you have to listen to an audio intro that long over and over again (as many of our mobile listeners do, every day), it gets really annoying. The golden rule for these things is: "keep it short." You'll notice this trend in TV shows as well. TV Shows in the 80's had much longer intros than they do today. It's just not necessary.
