August 24, 2007 at 5:10 AMMan2Toe, The problem with the word 老家 (lǎojiā) is that it's quite subjective and can depend on the context. For example, if a Shanghainese asks another Shanghainese where his 老家 (lǎojiā) is, he's most likely referring to "ancestral home" (on the father's side) if he knows the other person also grew up in Shanghai. But if it were two university students who are studying in the capital city, they probably just want to know where the person hails from.
