August 27, 2007 at 8:26 AMMark, I think the person from Nanyang was being generous with the population statistics, because you can count population as only the population of the city proper, and then you can also include suburbs and surrounding area if you want. Here are some Chinese city population statistics from Wikipedia and from ChinaToday.

August 27, 2007 at 8:21 AMGoulniky, Shanghainese is widely used in Shanghai, but there's also a large Chinese immigrant population in Shanghai that don't speak it. You hear it around town, but I've never felt the need to learn it to communicate; everyone understands standard Mandarin (even if some of the old generation don't speak it well). You will not find Shanghainese children that don't speak Mandarin in Shanghai.

August 26, 2007 at 7:33 AMwildyaks, Well, since I am still a young man (and I have been one for about 10 years), I dared to ask as their spokesman. I can't speak for the old or the female, and since my memory is pretty bad, I can't even speak for the very young... :)

August 24, 2007 at 5:13 AMAZERDocMom, I think that regional habits definitely play a part. Unfortunately, I can't say much about the Mandarin spoken in Taiwan...
