调/diao4 means key or tune. Major 大调/da4 diao4, minor 小调/xiao3 diao4.

July 18, 2011 at 5:27 AMHehe, probably we are working on such a huge topic that we can't finish in 15 minutes every time. The interesting thing I can remember about drinking and toasting is people always make hundreds of excuse to toast while the other one make thousands of excuse to refuse. Sometimes the atmosphere really depends on how people toast each other, and the interesting sayings they use. Like,
啥都别说,一切都在酒里/shá dōu bié shuō, yíqiè dōu zài jiǔ lǐ/ lit. Don't say too much, everything is in the liquor.
酒后吐真言/ jiǔ hòu tǔ zhēn yán/ Wine is mirror of the mind.
Both are kind of blue.

July 18, 2011 at 4:35 AM二锅头 is known as a typical and triditional Beijing local 白酒/烧酒. It says in the past 800 years, 二锅头 uses normal ingredients such as wheat and sorghum, but specially take the 酒 after second time distilling. 红星 is one of the famous 二锅头 brewers, starts from 1949, and sells affordable pure 二锅头. Now it's very poplular in the north of China, especially in Beijing, not only because the price, but also the flavour people get used to. In Shanghai, it's sure that less 二锅头 but more 黄酒 you will find.

July 18, 2011 at 4:01 AMHi bodawei, you are right, rice is also the main ingredient of 白酒. Thanks for pointing this out. It's just because we talked about the rice ingredient in order to make clear of the 米酒 and 黄酒.
白酒 is also called 烧酒, and can made from any ingredients containing starch and sugar.

July 26, 2011 at 2:18 AMActually it comes from 'so fast'. You can find many interesting sayings in Chinese bbs, hot blogs. Like 沙发, means the first comment that reply to the topic. In another sense, the first comment is easy to be found after the topic when scrolling down the web page, and plus a fancy 'couch' which you can sit in and see the rest 'behind' you. So, many people really enjoy the 沙发 and sometime 抢沙发. If the 沙发 been taken, no worry there are other interesting sayings you can use, like
1st comment, 沙发
2nd, 板凳
3rd, 地板
4th, 地下室.
Or add your own, creatively. People use them just for fun.
