Additionally, I had a great history teacher back in high school who taught us a lot of juicy pieces of history that I still remember today. I'm not sure about other Chinese people. I would guess those Chinese who love Chinese history probably know some of this content.

May 11, 2012 at 10:45 AM上只角（上质角）is a 100 years' old slang word from the Shanghainese dialect which people still use now to describe the French Conccession. Although there are many people who don't know the 法租界, most Shanghainese still recognize that 上只角 represents highest class in Shanghai. In contrast, we also have 下只角（下质角）, which refers to some places located in Yangpu Dist., Hongkou Dist., and Putuo Dist. in Shanghai.
角, /gɔ/ in Shanghainese, means corner or small area. Besides the meaning of high and low, people believe the reason why 上 and 下 are used is because of their positioning in relation to the Huangpu River.

It says inside the 上只角 there is a '权利三角‘, the trangle of power, which is consisted by Hengshan Rd., Huaihai Rd. and Huashan Rd. Maybe we can talk about this in next show.
