A Promotion

July 08, 2010 at 12:02 PM posted in Transcripts with TalI am working on a transcript of the Intermediate lesson 'A Promotion'. It is based on a transcript by someone called Adam Curtis 4 years ago.
It is one of Ken's lessons. Having to do this transcript really reinforced how bad Ken was. He continually talks and mumbles over Jenny's lines, and can barely string an English sentence together, let alone a Chinese one.
Here is the link to the lesson:

I have some questions from the podcast, if anyone is interested in listening to it. Any help would be appreciated.
1. (5:51)
To rise – to raise. To rise – to raise. Dōu shì shàngshēng, *** yìsi. Hăo. Nà zhèlĭ háiyŏu yīge bĭjiào zhòngyào de cí jiùshì zhŭnbèi.)
2. (6:55)Jenny: Finance. (Finance. Duì. Hěnduō hěnduō. Hăo ne. ** yào zuò shìchăng bù jīnglĭ. Jīnglĭ shì yīge mán gāo de zhíwèi a.)
Motivate. (Yīnwèi nĭ shì ge lăobăn. Nĭ zuì yóuxì qu jiùshì jīfā. Motivate. Nĭ yuángōng * zhèige hăo de biăoxiàn hé tàidu.)
(So tàidu gēn biăoxiàn * fēicháng * zhòngyào, duì ma?)
(Tèsè, duì. Nà háiyŏu shénme ne. Wŏ juéde nĭde Zhōngwén bĭ wŏde háihăo. Wŏ dōu méiyŏu xiăngdào tèsè, zhèige cí.)
6. (11:52)Ken: 我希望*********** (Wŏ xīwàng ***************.)
Maybe we should listen to that dialog one more time.
[Good luck with this one.]
Sense of achievement。Búguò wŏ háishì juéde shēnghuó zhōng yŏu hĕnduō dōngxi, bĭ yĭqián yào zhòngyào, duì ma, jiùxiàng nĭ gānggang shuō de. Kĕnéng nĭde yīge shìyè de zhèizhŏng guĭdào a. Career path. Sense of achievement.)
[No particular question here - its long, and I'm sure to have made mistakes]
(Dànshì, míngtiān wŏmen huì huílái. Xièxie dàjiā. Zàijiàn.)

Bob I'm not understanding why you're having to do this transcript. Why not choose a lesson you like?

But my files are Word files - I use Word so that I can get the formatting right, and can easily convert to PDF.
And 'attach file' would be great if it were available for every comment, and not just for new posts.

You can also copy from notepad (if you use Windows) which will prevent any weird formatting issues. We've also got an "attach file" option now, which will allow you to upload a file of your choosing to a user post (like this one). If you're having trouble using it let me know and I'll be happy to help.

I didn't say I didn't like the lesson. All lessons have value from the point of view of what Jenny has to say, and the dialog itself. I just think Ken is dreadful. I'm doing this lesson simply because its been half done before - I thought I'd tidy up these ones before I started a new one for myself.
Anyway, I'm not sure what to do now. My transcript is in Word, and CPod in its wisdom have removed the Paste From Word button. So I don't know how to post my questions.
