你好 Lisa,

Please correct my sentences 中文是 "请修改我的句子".

这是我的修改:

1。 每天我早上七点起床。

2。 每年夏令时三月开始和十月结束。

3。 星期一和 星期二 , 我早上四 点半起床。

4。 星期五 我 早上 六点 十五 分起床。

Word order in Chinese is slightly different from that in English, the adverbials is placed before the main verb.

I think 李霞 is very much like a Chinese name, actually I have a friend whose name is also 李霞。李 is a commen Chinese surname and 霞 means red sky in sunrise or sunset.

希望你一切都好!

Hi Lisa,

谢谢你留言!

'Wish you were here.' 中文是‘希望你在这里 xīwàng nǐzàizhèli’

得 is often used to link a verb and the complement, for example: 吃得多,睡得好,说得好。While 的 is used before a noun to indicate that the noun was belong to or related to the previous word. Ror example, 我的书, 她的故事,可爱的小狗。

There is a qingwen lesson about 了, but I am sorry, the grammar guide haven't released. You can write sentences to me and I am happy to correct and explain them.

Hope it helps,

Lily

请问:

I am not sure how to use "得" and "的" and "了" in different expressions. Is there a QingWen lesson or grammar guide on ChinesePod that can help me? Are you able to search for lessons--I've tried and failed. Otherwise, I will send you sentences and maybe examples will help show what I'm not getting.

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for your messages, yes, you are right, next Friday I will be in the holiday. So we will talk on May 7th. I am sorry for inconvenience.

Your writing is very good! Most of them are correct.  Good job! Please find my correction below

Btw. xiànzài tiānqi zěnmeyàng ?

Best regards,

Lily

--------------------

Here is my correction:

2. jīntiān tiānqi yángguāng.

My correction: jīntiān yǒu yángguāng.

3. Tàiyáng gāngcái shēngqǐ le.

jiù means at once, right after, while gāngcái means just, a moment ago, so gāngcái would be better.

6. Zhèlǐ Tàipíngyáng shì hěn lěng.

My correction: zhèlǐ tàipíngyáng hěnlěng.

We don't use 是 When adjective work as predicate.

 9. Both two statements are correct.

A, Wo3 gong1zuo4 er4 xiao3 shi2 yi1tian1

This one is correct, although time adverbials are always placed before the verb, the amount of time is placed after the verb, e.g. wo3 xue2 zhong1 wen2 yi1 nian2 le.  I have studied Chinese for 1 year.

Xia4 xing1qi1, wo3men shuo1 tian1qi1.

Wo3men xia4 xing1qi1 shuo1 tian1qi1.

Both these two sentences are in correct order, time adverbials can also used before the subject as in English words order.

I have already assigned some lessons, talk to you on Friday.

Best regards

   Qing3 wen4,

A. Wo3 gong1zuo4 er4 xiao3 shi2 yi1tian1.

OR

B. Wo3 er4 xiao3 shi2 yi1tian1 gong1zuo4.

? Xia4 xing1qi1, wo3men shuo1 tian1qi1.

? Wo3men xia4 xing1qi1 shuo1 tian1qi1.

(I wrote this sentence but I think it must be a bad one--please help! In English: Next week we will talk about weather.)

Could you put several weather-related lessons  in my assigned lessons? This would help me find them. I hope you can do this even though you are working from home.

Hi Lisa,

1, Kou3 is rarely used in modern Chinese, it is from "wen2yan2wen2" which is the formal written language used in about 100 years ago. zui3 can used in almost every circumstance, except in some set praises(cheng2 yu3) which was invented hundreds years ago.

2, A. Wo3 you3 mao4zi tou2 shang4. The meaning of the answer is correct, but the words order should be: Wo3 de tou2shang4 you3 mao4 zi3.

3, Wo3 de lian3 shang4 you3 yan3jing4.  This one is in correct order.

For the tone marks, I am not sure whether my method works for you or not, every time I want to type tone marks, I type it on another program and then copy and paste to the place I want to write. I think it is a very ineffective way. I am sorry.

jia1 you2!

Great weekend,

Ni3 Hao3, Lily.

Xue2xi2 de shi2 hou4, you3 hen3 duo1 de "qing3 wen2" !!

What are the right times to use zui3 and to use kou3 ? Are both used interchangeably? Is one more polite or more formal?

2. When you asked Ni3 you3 tou2 shang4 shen2me? could I have answered:

   A. Wo3 you3 mao4zi tou2 shang4.

   B. You3 mao2 tou2 shang4.

   C. You3 tou2fa tou2 shang4.

   D. You3 lian3 tou2 shang.

   E. Wo3 you3 liang3 ge Yan3jing, liang ge er3duo, bi2zi he2 zui3 tou2 shang.

3. Word order for "I have glasses on my face" is Wo3 de lian3 shang4 you3 yan3jing4; and NOT Wo3 you3 yan3jing4 lian3 shang4.  ??

4. I have installed the program that puts tone marks in place of tone numbers for pinyin, but I don't see how to use it in these messages on the counseling page. Can you advise me?

Hi Lisa,

Here are the verbs: zhang1kai1 张开(to open) bi4shang4 闭上 (to close)

to open mouth

zhang1 kai1 zui3  张开嘴

to open eyes

zhang1 kai1 yan3jin1  张开眼睛

to close mouse

bi4shang4 zui3  闭上嘴

to close eyes

bi4shang4 yan3jing1 闭上眼睛

"In closed mouth, no flies enter" its literally translation is: bi4shang4 zui3, cang1ying1 bu2 jin4lai2.

But we have an idiom which have same meaning as this proverb, that is "病从口入 bing4 cong2 kou3 ru4" which means illness finds its way in by the mouth.

Ni3 hao3, Lisa,

I am happy you are so hard working, for the questions:

1) Yes, you are correct, 2010 can read as er4 ling2 yao1 ling2 or er4 ling2 yi1 ling2, both are correct.

2) Good sentence, perfect!

3) All your sentence are correct.

I must straighten my knee.

Wo3 yao4 bian4 zhi2 xi1gai4.  This sentence is correct.

'能 neng2'  means ' can, be able to '

So “xi1gai4 neng2 bian4 shi2. ” , this sentence means 'Knees can be straightened.'

"要 yao4" has three meanings: 1,want/wish (to); ask (for) ;

e.g. wo3 e4 le, wo3 yao3 chi1 da4can1.

I am hungry, I want to have a big meal.

2, shall; will; be about to;

e.g. zhong1guo2 xin1nian2 yao4 lai2 le.

Chinese new year is comming.

3, must; should; need to

ming2tian1 wo3 yao4 gong1zuo4.

I have to work tomorrow.

I hope it would help you.

Wish you a very happy weekend!

Ni3 hao3, Lily!

So many new things to practice this week:

     Zhe4ge xing1qi1 you3 duo1 zi4 lian4 xi2!

Qing3 wen2: When I say the year now, do I say:

    er4 lin2 yao1 ling2 (2010) ?  Huo4 zhe3???

Qing3wen2: "I was in the hospital for 3 days."

"Wo3 zai4 yi1yuan4 san1 tian1 le?"

Qing3wen2:

   Wo3 xi1gai4 bu4 shu1fu.

   Xi1gai4 hao3 teng2 le.

   Wo3 yao4 bian4 zhi2 xi1gai4.

        (I must straighten my knee)

xi1gai4 neng2 bian4 shi2.  Is this a good way to say it? When do we use "yao4" and when do we use "neng2"?

Ni hao Lisa,

Sorry for the late reply. I am happy to take all your questions.

I used to be a teacher.

wo3(I)  yi3qian2(before) shi4(to be)  lao3shi1(teacher).

我以前是老师。

I also used to be an engineer.

wo3(I) yi3qian2(before) ye3 (also) shi4 (to be) gong1cheng2shi1(engineeer).

我以前也是工程师。

I am a scientist.

wo3 shi4 ke1xue2jia1(科学家 scientist).

I do biomedical research in a laboratory.

wo3 zai4 shi2yan4shi4(实验室 laboratory) zuo4(做 to do) sheng1wu4 yi1xue2 (生物医学 biomedical) yan2 jiu1(研究 reserch).

我在实验室做生物医学研究。

I was a homemaker when my children were young.

wo3 de(我的my) hai2 zi(孩子children ) xiao3 (小 young/small ) de shi2 hou4 (time),wo3 shi4 jia1ting2 zhu3fu4 (家庭主妇homemaker).

"kou3口" is  the measure for the total number of family menbers. "ge4个" is the measure words for each relatives and for people.

"个ge4" is very commenly used measure word, if you are not sure which measure word to used, you can always try "ge4个”

For the question about "jia1"

We Chinese always enjoy life in a large family, I think Children and brother and step Children and grandchildren and husband of daugher(女婿 nǚxu)  or wife of son(er2 xi2fu) are "  jia1 ren2 (家人 people in the family)", no matter live together or not.  Ex husband may not be called jia1 ren2( 家人 people in the family), but he is the jia1 ren2( 家人 people in the family) of the Children. The family dog can not be a "jia1 ren2" because “ren2” means people, but it could be a "jia1 ting2 cheng2 yuan2"(family member).

I hope this explaination could help.

Best regards

Lily

N3 hao3, Lili,

   Qing3 wen4, Zhong1wen2 zen3me shuo1:

I used to be a teacher.

I also used to be an engineer.

I am a scientist.

I do biomedical research in a laboratory.

I was a homemaker (at-home mother?) when my children were young.

Another question:

Is it right to say: You3 yi1 kou3 di4di.

Or is there a different measure word for each relative?

Another question:

In the sentence ni3 jia1 you3 ji3 kou3 ren2? does this mean how many people are now living together at home? Or--how close are the relatives who are included in "jia1"?  What about:

   Ex-husband?

Children and brother who live elsewhere?

   Step-children?

   Husband's first wife?

   Relatives no longer alive?

   Grandchildren?

   Husbands of daughters?

   Cousins?

   The family dog?

This is a hard lesson to use when my life is not the life of a young student! Zhen1 dui4buqi3, duo1 de wen4ti2!

Hi Lisa,

Thank you!

Your sentences are very good, only one sentence need correction. The 3rd sentence:

Wo3 de peng2you3 zhu4 yuan3.

I corrected it as:

Wo3 de peng2you3 zhu4 de yuan3.

the particle de 得 is used to connect the verb and its complement. For example,

你做得很好。

ni3 zuo4 de hen3 hao3.

You did very well.

All the orther sentences are correct.
