Why Lantian Is Great
John
July 17, 2007 at 09:50 AM posted in General DiscussionThis is a post dedicated to Lantian. He is a very smart, active user. We value his feedback very highly.
I would like to hear your reasons why Lantian is great.
By all means, leave lots of comments.

Rich,
We can delete blatant blank post offenders.
I'm not sure what weekending means, so I can't guess about how to translate it.

Comment-police? Weekend-ing? Oh sure, blame someone else. ;) So uh, what were you going to post, or were you just button-clicking happy?
Or at the least, can you tell me how to say "weekend-ing" in Chinese? :P

OK NOW, just to set the record straight, my above blank post (which the Johnny Green Giant poked fun at ) was PURELY ACCIDENTAL! Since it occurred while the comment-police (Eileen) was off weekend-ing somewhere, it didn't get removed. I am innocent!

Ah, thanks John for the clarification. It sucked not having Internet access at home or any close friend's home, so I've been just busy downloading lessons and listening to then hardly when I'm online. Now that I'm more available and in America with a direct line, I'll be posting more too, but not for the points, just because I love to see people progressing in the Chinese language (but hey, the points can't be too bad... heh)

EVENS STEVENS - wei shenme wei shenme 为什么?
Actually it doesn't hurt that I post here, and he and I both would get a credit point. But since JOHN was the one that started the thread, he gets the count, and thus uses my luv to up HIS overall count. Notice how he has almost caught up with our much beloved Bazza!
Now if you think that he is just a benevolent innocent, let us not forget his quote "我只是有一点狡猾而已。” To translate, "Maybe I'm just a little tricky."
真是小聪明! But then again, maybe WE'RE tricking him and making him stay up all night and day working for us here at Cpod!!! :)

Why is it bad that Lantian posts on a conversation started by someone else? Can someone fill me in on how this takes away from his post count?

蓝天 Lántiān=blue sky.
Rayleigh scattering [named for Lord Rayleigh, aka John William Strutt, Nobel Prize in Physics 1904] refers to the scattering of light off of the molecules of the air. It is Rayleigh scattering which gives us our blue sky.
And Lantian's particles of wisdom make all our days brighter in much the same way.
How's that for a metaphorical stretch?

蓝天 Lántiān is like Rayleigh scattering (i.e., he's the answer to that age-old question: why is the sky blue?).

Ah, but Amber, writing on his own post would only detract from his score!
And can I get an amen on how many CPod staffers are doing this on their own time? Look at the time stamps on these things. It's almost midnight in Shanghai and we've seen posts from John, Amber, David and Jenny! These are people who love what they do!

Yes, Lantian is so wonderful. He gives me nicknames like "A1 steaksauce" and teaches me how to optimize my time in order to best live a live of leisure, like him... Although his 'we like Amber' post is a thinly veiled self-serving plot, he has learned that flattery gets him everywhere, including shout outs on Cpod podcasts, only adding to his infamy.
LANTIAN, oh no, this means one more post for JOHN! you are getting behind... you had better get out of bed before noon tomorrow and write a whole bunch of nice things about me on your post to catch up, hehehe!

July 17, 2007 at 03:16 PMHear, hear. You all speak so much truth, and yet there remains still so much unspoken. Perhaps we could hear more from others... ...or even Lantian himself??

Lantian is the living proof of self motivation, discpline and to some extent, the effectiveness of chinesepod (I have to throw that in).
If you trace back his comments, it is a clear path of steady growth of linguistic ability and also active involvement. Certainly a Chinesepod Hall of Famer, like so many of you guys out there.

Lantian is valuable for many reasons. The one reason that I would like to bring up is his willingness to use Mandarin to post and communicate. At times here in Cpod, opinions are expressed that discourage the use of characters. Some don't like characters, some think that seeing a bad sentence in Mandarin will hurt their learning.(if this was truly the case, just think how bad all of our English skills would be) IMO Lantian's attitude is what is needed to really learn Mandarin well. The choice not to learn characters is a choice not to learn Mandarin well. The choice not to post in Mandarin is a choice not to stretch one's Mandarin abilities. So, Lantian rocks for many reasons, but here I mention Lantian's courage to throw his whole self into learning.

I think LanTian is great and smart and good-looking and his chinese rocks!!!
Thank you guys (LanTian and John) for making me smile today :)
*** By the way... I'm commenting to both LanTian and John's post... this way, although will give you guys one more point overall, it will cancel out against each other

July 23, 2007 at 03:09 AM"Weekend-ing" is an entirely de novo word I made up because I finished my night-shift with a foggy brain and posted just before going to bed. Don't think there is a Mandarin word for it...except perhaps "zou1muo4-ing" (weekend-ing? ) There I go again, making up words! In Mandarin no less!
