May 29, 2008 at 01:00 PM posted in General DiscussionHi all, this thread is for trying out the commenting features of the new site so that we don't clog up the lesson comments with gibberish. The thread can be removed when its purpose is completed.

COOL! It worked! Thanks Brent! Except the URL is under "properties." not "save image location" on my iMac G5.
Thank you for this thread, sushan!

You may have noticed you can resize the images after insert them and clicking on them and dragging the square at the corners and middle of the edges.

Flickr, Picasa, there are lots of photo sites. I use Picasa and, if you have a Mac (does iPhoto run on Windows?), you can manage your Picasa photos from within iPhoto without going online. The other sites might have similar features, but I've never used them.
If you do place an image using one of these sites, make sure to follow Calkins excellent advice (above) on how to properly load the image location; you can't just cut and paste urls.

Thanks Calkins... that makes sense, but it's a bit of a pain since I tend not to put photos on websites! Oh well.
(Would ChinesePod just be able to put a maximum file size on photos added?)
jgwilson: you need to go to the "Me" tab, and then, in the far right column, change the settings on your personal feed. Something in the changeover changed those settings for a lot of us. For a few days there were no traditional PDFs, but now they're back. Just change the settings and you should be OK.
(If your issue is with the traditional plug-in for Firefox, then I have no idea. I can just tell you that it still works for me on a Mac.)

Before, with the old site, the lessons I got were in traditional characters. But now, they are all in simplified!

Yes, thanks Brent/calkins, for clearing up the "proportions" issue. I agree with you that it's a lot of work! Night night.

I lied, I'll go to bed after answering LostinAsia's question.
You can't upload directly from your computer. If there was a function to do that, CPod's servers would get overloaded with too many large files.
Instead, you have to upload your photo to a website, either your own or one like Flickr.
Good night for real this time!

Hi all....fun with photos! Unfortunately you have to manually set the proportions of the photo. It should have an auto "constrain proportions" function...maybe CPod can add that.
In the meantime, if you go to the URL where the photo resides, you should be able to find the size of the photo (in pixels) at the top of the browser window. Reduce the width of the photo to 425 pixels, then divide 425 by the original width of the photo. That'll give you the percentage to multiply by the original height. Hope that makes sense.
For example, Light's photo here is 500 pixels x 375 pixels (it says so at the top of the browser window).
Now, divide 425 by 500 = 85%
Then, multiply 375 x .85 = 319 (rounded up)
So when you insert the image, resize it to 425 pixels wide x 319 pixels high.

Too much work!!! That's why there should be an auto constrain proportion tool :)
Okay, with that I will say goodnight....goodnight.

Okay, let me try that again... is there any way to scale the image automatically so that the width won't exceed 425px but the aspect will be preserved?

I think that the Alignment thing in the Insert/Edit Image thing is the culprit of many of those problems up above.
This picture is not aligned, only the URL was entered, nothing else:

The next image was added with a border of 2 and alignment of Text Bottom, with description Backyard:
This next one is the same as above, except I have chosen to reduce the size of the image and align Left:
Which means I should be able to write over here on the right of the picture.
This is the same but aligned on Right:
Which means I should be able to write over here on the left.
Now I will add some top and bottom spacing as my last test:

This thread HAS a topic?! I'm kind of enjoying the sheer randomness of it.
Let's try a picture:

And now, let's me test the font and the others.

Calkins, I lived in Shanghai for 6 months in 1981 and in 高雄,台湾 for four years from 1982 to 1985. Actually, during that period I mostly lived in a hotel as I travelled 80+% (auditing) at the time. Afterwards I had kids and raised them in the States. Now they are all grown, so I have no kids; I plan on returning (大陆), around this time next year.

Hey Cassie, I hope the new internship/job has been good for you so far. I have also been busy with work and not a lot of time for CPod. Actually, I should have been working more these past few days, but I've been more addicted to the new CPod, trying to figure out all the new features. Hopefully none of my clients are CPod users ;)
(Sorry everyone for the off-topic post).

Ha, you figured it out by yourself...good! I realized that you have to insert it as "Type" Flash, even though it's a Shockwave file.
Also, you can't edit the dimensions.
And like others have stated, I think it'd definitely be helpful to have a Support section for all the comment tools.

Miss Cassie, hi! You can't copy and paste the code anymore. You need to use the "Insert/edit embedded media" tool in the comment box...it's the film strip, the last icon on the right. I haven't tried this yet, so hopefully this works:

No problem Tvan, glad I could help. I didn't know there was a Trinity River in California...good to know. For some reason, I thought you currently live in Taiwan. Not sure why I thought that - maybe you used to live there.
Sushan, you can't upload a photo directly from your computer's hard drive. It has to be a photo that resides on a web server (either your own website or a site like flickr).
I also think the "insert/edit image" tool could be a little better. It'd be nice if it scaled the photo proportionally. It suggests that the photo should be no wider than 425 pixels, but if you reduce the width to 425, it doesn't automatically change the height to be proportional (see Tvan's second photo).

just grabbed a random picture off the web, the myvillage was already in there....pictures online seem to work ok except the field names are confusing and should have realistic limits built into them instead of a suggested width...is it impossible to give help explaining the fields? And why is there only one tab on the picture tool? Just lame from a UI standards perspective.
Am I supposed to be able to upload a picture from my computer? Let me try.....ok, that made a real mess....

Sushan, what village? Trying Calkins advice on inserting images.

Aaah, much better. I don't plan on sharing many pictures/videos but, for the non-web cognescenti, I think this beats the old commenting system hands-down.
sushan
May 30, 2008 at 02:24 PM
whenever I try to post video it doesn't take. the video works in the preview, but when I click 'add comment' the page does nothing and the comment with video is not added. About to try with a picture...
...picture worked ok. Another thing about the video, even if I remove the video anything more I do in the post will have the same results. ie and firefox have same issue.
Now how long do I have left to edit?
Now how long?

Calkins, thx. I've written down you instructions for posterity. I think Cpod should go through your HTML suggestions and add them to the help section.
No, this Trinity River is in the Northern California Coast Range between the thriving metropolises of Redding (my birthplace) and Arcata (my current residence).

Tvan, it looks like the problem is that the link you put in for the photo (http://picasaweb.google.com/tvanluven/Rafting/photo#5205795682632923554) is not where the photo actually resides.
What you need to do, when linking to a site like picasa or flickr, is:
1. Within picasa or flickr, right-click the photo.
2. Click "Copy Image Location" (which in this case is http://lh6.ggpht.com/tvanluven/SD6zl4SY-aI/AAAAAAAAAdI/EgScZw40-9c/IMG_1596.jpg?imgmax=720)
3. Use the "Insert/edit Image" tool in the comment box, like you did above.
4. Enter the image URL (from step 2) and any other info...
Hope this helps.

Playing around with the image/link functions.
Hmmm, don't see anything. Does the link work? I can link to photos, but seem to be doing something wrong when I try to insert a graphic. If anyone has suggestions, I'd be happy to listen. I set the width at 425 and height at 318.

In IE the default font size for posting is way to small. Please increase the font size.
I know we can use ctrl + to increase the magnification of the page, but it should not be necessary.
None of the other text sites I read on the web regulary, i.e. online newspapers, blogs, etc. have such small text.
Reading English, my native language, is a strain. Reading Chinese characters at this size is almost impossible.
Please, WEB MASTER, change the default font size for posts and comments.
Thanks.

Hmmm. this is strange. Cause when the site went live, I was able to post quite happily in Firefox, (my prefered browser) then after reading Derek's post, I tried again to post. I could type and be Bold italic underline and strikethrough. But I couldn't change the colour of the text or highlight it. Which is kinda annoying, why has it stopped working? I love the new site but the bugs are sorta making me a little sad, as I was sooooo excited before.
Aah, never mind, hopefully things will work out.
and yes that little box is SOOO big in firefox.
