Dear Poddies,

Just released a new version of v3.4.0 for Android. Trying to get this app stable and add new features at the same time, yet the bad reviews keep coming, which doesn't stop us, but do hope to address them.

Hard thing is that reviews on Google Play, I can't even reach the reviewer and say we hear them loud and clear, but can't get details. If they write to android@chinesepod.com I do write back to ask questions. For example, a new review for this version says that they can't resume where they left off when the go to another app and come back, but I never have this problem, even starting up 10 other apps and then returning. One must understand that Android OS removes an app when another app in the foreground needs memory, so if you are on a phone with low memory, releases part or all of the background app's code in memory, but we do get permissions to keep playing the audio in the background, but nothing more.

So if you do have issues, please do let us know. I have even listened to a few improvements such as filtering on lessons which you have downloaded audio (Lesson audio, Dialogue audio, or Review audio). This even helped me in testing so I can find lessons I have downloaded audio for. I do take pride in getting this to be a better app, yet also have to develop for so many devices with so many screen resolutions with so many versions of Android OS, so bound to be problems. Apple iOS devices are much more limited thus easier to address issues & features.

Main new feature, other than Glossary and personal/private messages, is being able to see Lesson Discussions and comment like you do with a web browser. I believe it was Bazza who said he would come back and post again if there was Lesson Discussions in his app (he is an old time user, but hasn't posted since 2009, yet we talk on Facebook), but I believe he is on iOS...that is coming soon for iOS as well.

Here is the write up for the updates for v3.4.0:

New for v3.4.0:

Glossary
- able to search words and add them to your flashcards.
- able to lookup a word from any drill-down in the Glossary

Messages

- Can read messages from teachers and other users and reply, archive and delete.

Lesson Discussions

- able to read comments, make your own, and reply to others.

Other:

- Now displays lesson images in lesson lists.
- Able to filter Self-Study lessons for only lessons with downloaded audio files.
- Help screen in the Settings page.
- Fixed layout problems for small screen devices.

The new update doesnt work well at all on my Asus Transformer Prime, nothing will download anymore. The android status bar at the bottom shows files getting downloaded when you click on, for example, the "download discussion" link, but then the app gets out of sync and will never show that it's completed, it always stops at something less than 100%, and then hangs like it's waiting for more file. I think by that time the file has actually already been downloaded though.

Tried completely uninstalling it, and reinstalling it, still doesn't work.

Very frustrating, this app is awesome... when it works.

Trying to get it all working, and thanks for your advice. Yes, it probably is getting fully downloaded, but for some reason isn't changing the view when it hits 100%...I'll remember to look at it more for this new release.

Hi Rich,

Haven't read the reviews on Google Play so I don't know what's been said but I'm having issues actually being able to start the lesson and reviews.

After opening a lesson, I can see the big main picture for the lesson and I can see the two panels for 'Review' and 'Actions' with the big red buttons. The problem is that the buttons obscure the smaller buttons for lesson, dialogue and review. There's no way to click these as the big red buttons receive the touch gesture.

Running on the Nexus 7 32GB. Let me know if you need any more info or screenshots and I'll get back to you.

Thanks

Ah, I'm sure it got through...been working hard on fixing layout problems today, and even got v3.4.1 released with some fixes, mainly with layout, but also included a few of the new features I was working on, the indicators in the Lesson Listing to know what lessons you have downloaded, studied, and bookmarked. Let me know if it works. I also tried to work with crashing problems with image loading (out of memory errors). I just put it on Google Play...should be available in 4 hours from the time of this post.

Received a failed notification for the email in delivering to Zhang Ke. I received a support ticket however so assuming everyone else on the mailing list got it!

Yeah, I've heard development across the myriad Android devices can be a pain!

Sent an email to that address with the screenshot.

The previous version looked ok as far as I remember. Didn't have any problems completing a lesson and all its parts.

Was the older version, v3.3.2 looking ok on your screen, or also a bit messed up?

Yes, screen sizes are the hardest thing to handle. Somehow the images are getting too big on your device. I have to go by screen size, pixel density, and screen width of dots-per-inch and not always easy. I will look into it. Please do send some screenshots to android@chinesepod.com, which will go right to my inbox. That will help. Thanks.
