Have you guys removed the Offline feature completely from the iPad app? I am using version 1.3.3 and I cannot access anything I have downloaded while I am offline.

This is completely unacceptable!!

I left Chinesepod while ago because you guys are constantly having problems with the app (I do 90% of my studies while commuting without Internet connection).

Now I paid one month subscription to see if things have improved (let's face it, overall you are better than your competion).

But it seems that things with the app are even worse than before :-(

I have discussed this with our iOS developer and he is currently looking into the offline issues. On our end, the caching issue was solved with the previous update, but it seems to have re-appeared quite recently. We are wondering if it is has something to do with the API.

I am still experiencing the same problem (again) -- all of my lessons disappear from the app when I am not on line. I have basically given up on Chinesepod ever fixing this, so I did not make a point of notifying them again. Its a problem for me when I fly, but fortunately I mostly use the app on a phone so I don't lose access to all my lessons. If all you need is the audio you could just download the mp3 files. I do try to download a few CPod lessons now and then using the podcast app on my iPhone. Obviously I don't get all the other useful features of the CPod app, but I suppose I could also review CPod lessons with Pleco (with flashcards that continue to work when I am offline :-) . . .I used to port a lot of my CPod vocabulary over to Pleco. Not so much any more as I am using Skritter as my main vocabulary review tool. I tend to use Pleco for quickly learning specific lists. Skritter's mobile iOS app also continues to work when offline. I guess what I am saying is that if you use the podcast app, + Skritter, + Pleco, you can sort of replicate the functions that the Chinesepod app is supposed to be giving you in terms of mobility but does not.

The Ipad app looks great and the Lessons have played flawlessly for the most part. Content of ChinesePod itself is of course tremendous, the staff continues to nail the topic choices even 2,800 lessons in. However, am having huge problems with the app, version 1.3.2

1. Lessons, previously downloaded, no longer seem to be accessible in offline mode on my iPod Touch.

2. Flashcards not only aren't accessible when offline (head scratcher as to why not, as I have read requests for this functionality for years on this site) but consistently crashes when a) vocab set reaches 500 or more words, b) I try to Manage anything larger than a small 100 or so word set; or c) try to Shuffle   Collectively that makes this part of the app of little use, which is a shame because Flashcards would be ideal when one is mobile.

3. Worst of all, today I get Error messages ("expected 200-209, got 400") when I try to do anything with the iPad app, from accessing Lessons to Vocab even to Logging Out. So I have no app today. I suddenly had logging in and logging out problems 2 weeks ago and that time I solved it by deleting and re-installing the app. But I don't want to do that again, as among other potential drawbacks I apparently would lose the green dots that mark my progress.

I can overlook the app not having all the functionality of the main site (eg, doesn't seem you can Save vocab from within the Expansion exercises). Fine, the app could still be a nice complement to the site if not a replacement. But my above three points are pretty serious bugs - giant dung beetles in fact. They cause serious time wastage, as we make study plans based on features that we got used to and thought we could count on.

It is a bug in the app. Few of us stopped using the app because of this problem.

Thanks, RJ I did hear back from Justin and he pointed me to the updated app. That seems to have solved the problem, at least insofar as I tested it.

Podster,

I noticed there is a new update for the iphone app dated 2/27. I took a chance. Didnt lose anything so thats a good sign. Not sure what has been fixed if anything since the main purpose was to add task functionality but maybe you should check it out.

Yes, it would be nice if the CPod app worked the way that it is designed to. I tried my "airplane mode" test and indeed all the content vanished. I got a "tap to download more lessons" prompt and when I tap it says "no lessons." I sent CPod a message about it via the app (oops, what was I thinking?). Anyway, maybe between that and the discussion on the board someone will take notice. The other thing I noted is that when I have this problem the cache shown under settings shows 0.0 MB, but as soon as I am back online everything that had been previously been downloaded instantly reappears.

On my iPhone its not too hard to download subscribed podcasts with the new (iOS6) podcast app. It took my a long time to figure out how to use the newest version of iTunes to move audio files from the computer to a device (iPod or iPhone).

if you are using itunes as a pod catcher on your laptop, you can also drag lessons to your itouch and then they are permanent. Its just less work to use the cpod app, but it has its drawbacks. It may be worth the effort when preparing for a trip. I still use both.

Thanks, RJ. Its really strange. I thought the latest CPod app had solved this problem, but maybe its a new compatibility issue with the newer version of iOS. I just upgraded to the lastest iOS and I will try switching to Airplane Mode (all radio communication off, both cellular and WiFi) and see what happens. I have an older iPod Touch and I have not bothered putting the current CPod App on it. I was not sure it could handle it. As for the flight, I downloaded some CPod and Popup Chinese podcasts and listened to those. Otherwise I watched bad Kung Fu movies and counted that as study time. The iTunes feed for for my podcast subscription seemed to shut down for Chinese New Year, but there was some fresh content after the holiday. Re "not a bug . . . .total app failure" I agree. I think CPod is looking to hire an iOS developer. Maybe some poddies are interested in applying?

Hi Podster,

I don't know if this will help you directly, but I have an "i-touch" (which is the i-phone minus the phone function) and it uses the same cpod i-phone app. I have the latest Cpod i-phone App (1.31 I think it is) and I tested it today. After leaving wifi range, all downloaded files were still intact and I was still able to listen to all previously bookmarked lessons. Earlier recent versions did not perform this way. My i-touch itself has version 5.1.1 OS. I did not enter any foreign wifi areas nor can I switch to cellular internet connectivity with my device so I cant speak to that, but it did work as I have described. You might want to take your laptop along on your 14 hour potential study fest, to which you can download mp3 files directly or through i-tunes. At least verify that your device is working as you cross into other WIFI territories or use cellular connectivity before you count on it for travel. This is after all the single most important part of this application for most of us. Its not a bug, its a total app failure in my opinion, if you cant keep what you have downloaded without continuous and uninterrupted WIFI connectivity.

I was just reading about "Google glass". The wearable spectacles that will allow internet/phone voice controlled access. See: http://www.google.com/glass/start/

Right now you have to enter and win and essay contest just for the right to buy a Beta pair for $1500.00. Should be widely available by end of 2013 however. I definitely want a pair. Cpod better start working on the APP Now. Start saving your money. Beats the ipad "hands down" so to speak. Imagine where this will go. Sky is the limit and the time is now.

Justin,

Any updates on this? I am getting ready for another 14 hour plane ride, and whenever I am not online all of the content in my CPod app disappears, making it completely useless. Has the app with bug fixes been submitted to Apple yet?

Perhaps they should offer a couple poddies free subscriptions in exchange for being official beta testers. And for that long plane ride, take an i-tunes download or two Ambien.

Justin, thanks for the update on the pending bug fixes. I heartily support fully testing the next version. I have a long plane ride coming up, so I hope the next version is available before then, but best not to introduce fresh bugs.

Yes, Rich was working on the Android app, which just got released today actually. This fixed the bookmarking/syncing bug, as well as a number of other issues.

As for the iOS app, we are very close to submitting it (our iOS developer estimates later this week). Once submitted, all Apple needs to do it review it before its official release. The new version has numerous bug-fixes, including fixing the major downloading/caching issue. Sorry its taking a little while, but our team just wants to spend a little more time testing this before we submit it!

Happened again today. The traffic regulations lesson keep disappearing and has to be downloaded anew each time. I suspect it has to do with when I change from one Internet connection to another. (E.g. WiFi to cellular). Hello CPod, anybody working on fixing this bug? I see Rich referring to having fixed something, but I don't think it is the same issue.

I am having the same problem; keep having to download the same lesson again and again on my iPhone app.   (Newest version of app, iOS 6)
