iPad app

Hi,

I'm having a very tough time with your iPad app: lessons are often can't be downloaded - I sometimes get "the request time out". When I do manage to download the lessons, they disappear after a while and have to be re-downloaded - what's that about?

I notice that the app is more stable when working through VPN but even then there are still lots of problems.

How frustrating it is when I've downloaded a bunch of lessons only to find out that I can't study while offline.

Sometimes downloaded lessons cannot be played and can't be re-downloaded.

I have two iPad 1 and both have the same problems.

I'm very disappointed with the low quality of your long anticipated iPad app. My subscription is up next month and I'm not going to renew if the iPad problem are not solved.

Thanks,

Val

I've occasionally had it start working again, but if I shut down my device (itouch) or wander out of wifi range, then once again all the lessons are wiped clean.  I've given up on the app.  But I am starting to download mp3s instead.

Chris, I have a galaxy tab, and this is all I do, as well. Just save the mp3 and pdf to my tab and listen/read at anytime. No need for apps, simple and easy. Pretty sure you can do this with an ipad as well...although probably need to stuff around with iTunes or other similar "apple-approved" nonsense.. (recommend just get a generic tab for $150-200...).

miskat, I'm looking at getting an iPad. so far I use cpod with my laptop and simply rightclick each lesson's mp3 and PDF and save them to a cpod folder on my desktop so I have them all offline. can you do the same with an iPad or do you have to be online (either the website or the App) to access the mp3 and PDF files?

I also lost all the downloaded content again this morning. I will also stop using the app. You guys are having some serious issues in your software development, this version should never have been released.

Luckily downloading mp3s and pdfs is working fluently from the web pages and the old iPhone app can be used for flash cards. But honestly speaking there is a quite big gap in quality level between the content of your lessons and the way you deliver them to us.

I doubt there is any better online solution available, but instead of just automatically renewing my yearly cp subscription next month I will first check what else is out there.

I'll echo much of what's been said here.  I've lost all my previously downloaded content; the app no longer works at all offline; and even with an internet connection I've been unable to download anything new.

I'm pretty frustrated with this -- not only because I can't use the app right now, but also because all the previous downloading effort was lost.  I don't see how this version could have been beta tested at all given the fundamental problems with it.

And now suddenly the app started working again. I am able to download lessons again.

From now on as a plan B I will always download the lesson PDF and mp3s also separately so that I can study also when the app refuses to work.

Yes, there is something really badly wrong in this latest version. I cannot access any lesson even in online. "You need Internet access to download this lesson". But I can actually refresh the library of lessons successfully so the Internet is definitely working.

App is now completely useless.

I was using the latest version for few days, but now all the content that I had downloaded has disappeared :-(

Hi Justin,

Most crashes happen during the loading of a lesson (after clicking on the green "study lesson" button)- the app either crashes right away or simply hangs with "loading" message and has to be restarted.

A few crashes also happened to me during download of a new lesson's audio files.

I'm using first generation iPad with iOS5.

Thanks,

Val

Thank you for all for the feedback.  Your comments and suggestions do a great deal in helping us fix bugs for future versions.

Our ultimate goal is to have an application which contains all of the features of the website and syncs fluidly across all devices.  Unfortunately, as we have not yet reached this point, we are adding functions and features to the application rather quickly, and thus are encountering more unforseen bugs (despite our pre-testing prior to app release).  I agree it will be nice to see the day when the application has stablized and less of these bugs pop-up.

I am a little suprised, however, as to the reports about frequent crashing.  We are having trouble noticing this on our end.  May I ask are there specific situations where you see the application crashing more frequently (i.e. during a specific sequence of actions? during downloading?, etc?)

Regarding the caching issue (downloaded content being lost), our development team has just fixed this, and we will push this in the next application release.

Other bugs are still being worked on, and we will push these fixes for the next app update as well.

Adding to my previous post about poor quality of your latest iPad app update:

1. Often, when I try to go to a new lesson, I get a message that it can't be downloaded because there is no internet connection, even though the iPad is online. I have to kill the app and retry to make it work;

2. About half of the sentences with audio can't play it with some error popping up for half a second. The previous update had the same problem, I was hoping that it was fixed;

3. The top menu bar is too low and covers half of the top line. The screen has to be dragged down to reveal that line;

4. The new function "test" is off to the right and with only "T" from the word "Test" visible. The menu has to be scrolled horizontally to get access to that new function;

5. The interface of that function itself (test) is completely messed up with some button off the screen, I couldn't even figure what was that for;

I really hope you can finally get together that iPad app, so far it's been a major disappointment.

I am now using the latest version (it seems to claim to be 2.0?).

It has a strange problem. I have downloaded three lessons (the update by the way deleted all the previously downloaded lessons so same experience as zoollah is reporting).

The problem is that one of the lesson audio (QW) files is always looping.

I mean that when I finish this particular QW audio it will start again automatically even if the repeat is off.

The strange part is that this happens also with other audio files. I mean if I finish any other audio file (in any other lesson) this particular QW audio will start automatically.

I've just installed another iPad app upgrade and it turned out to be so much worse that ever before!

First of all, all my previosly downloaded lessons are gone (again). Then, when I tried to refresh and download the lessons, the app kept crashing on me. When I managed to finally download a lesson and started downloading another one, the app crashed again and all the lessons that I did managed to download were erased!

I've been trying to download a single lesson for at least 5 times with all those crashes and restarts! But then, I went offline and all the lessons that I downloaded, even the list of the lessons went blank!!!

I've been an iPad user since they came to the market but I can't remember a single app that caused to me so much frustration as the cPod one.

Seems that the version 1.2.1 is out. The main "page" looks way better now.

Vocabulary/flash cards is still not available in offline mode. Is there any plans to add the offline support?

Seems that "repeat" issue that I mentioned in my previous post is gone :-)

One minor new bug today:

In one of the lessons ("Misunderstood Taxi Destination") the dialog and vocabulary is having all the sentences twice. The duplicates suddenly appeared today, they were not there yesterday.

Sad to hear about the offline mode. It makes this part of the app completely useless for me most of the time. I commute 2-3 hours per working day with WiFi only iPad...

Actually with the current version of the app I cannot delete the flash cards even when online.

On the other hand it is anyway much more easy to add new vocabulary from PC compared to the app. App requires three clicks for adding one word; not possible to add all vocabulary items at one go and worst of all not possible to add words from dialog, expansion or grammar sections.

The app is getting better with each version, but it still lacks many basic features. To get the full CP experience users need to use both the app and the chinesepod.com.

Thanks for the further feedback!

We actually just received a notice from Apple that version 1.3 is ready for release. This should be on the iTunes store within the next few days.

A number of bugs should have been fixed with this new release, however, I believe offline mode is still unavailable regarding the vocabulary/flash card sections. At the moment I believe we do not have plans to support this, however, I will put in word with our development team after the holidays and see what they can do for a future version.

Happy New Year!

New bug: iPad App crashes easily when audio player has the "repeat" on.

How reproduce:

1) Open audio file, press the repeat button, slide the audio forward. -> App freezes and then crashes.

2) Open audio file, press the repeat button, press play, listen the whole file -> When the audio should start again, App freezes and then crashes.

Hi,

Everytime I upgrade the app through the iTunes, all my previosuly downloaded lessons are gone and can't be re-downloaded for some reason - the button just doesn't work.

I had to delete the app and re-download the lessons. The same story happens with every upgrade that you release.

Sometimes, some files can't be downloaded at all with an error "request time out" or something like that. I have to close the app, restart and try again.

Often, after restarting the app, some previosuly downloaded lessons are gone, and again, have to be redownloaded...

While there are some imporvement in the new release, it's still quite bugged. I'm really hoping to get a stable version one day.

Thanks,

Val

I am experiencing the same kind of bugs in the app. I agree with Miskat above that the apps should be properly tested before release. The CPod team advised me to clear the cache and if that doesn't work delete and re-install the app, but I think either of those will cause me to lose all previously downloaded content. I guess I will have to manually download all those files again if I want acess to them. Next time they offer anything "new and improved" I will definitely wait for all the bug reports to come in first.

I have the latest version but this morning I cannot download any audio. Problem is obviously in the App because the chinesepod.com works just fine, I can even download the exact same content that the App refuses to do.

I also have to try the re-download. You guys really should test these apps properly before releasing them.

Thank you for the feedback. From the reports we have had, the problem seems to lie with corrupted cache from the old version of the app, which can only be completely removed by deleting and re-installing. Unfortunately, we have not been able to duplicate these errors on our end, so its still a little hard to say exactly what is going on here.

The good news is the re-download has worked for all of our users so far who have had this problem.

I will also put in word to our developers to prevent this from happening with the next application update.

Cheers,

Justin

Hi Val,

May I ask did you upgrade the application from the previous version, or download directly via iTunes?

Some users have experienced similar problems when they upgraded the application to the new version.  However, upon deleting and re-installing the application completely, this has solved the problem for users so far.  I would suggest trying this and please let us know if you continue to experience problems even after re-installing.

Cheers,

Justin

Hi Justin,

I've upgraded this version. I will try to delete it and re-download from iTunes.

Thanks for the suggestion.
