Thanks! Very interesting.
Three non-English-speaking countries on that list (not counting Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China). Three times Europe.
Comparing with actual population: Lots of marketing work ahead in Africa, the Middle East, and in Slavic & Turkish countries.

Very interesting and a good predictor for upcoming lessons (Cologne is probably on #21..).
What leaves me curious: Do you also have a statistic based on countries (Top 20)?
I remember an old blog entry from Ken where he enlisted over a 100 countries with Poddies - but that has been about 2 years ago.

It's hard to believe San Francisco isn't somewhere near the top. Then again, The City itself only has around 1 MM population and quite a few of them already speak Chinese.

To have Houston up there reflects our growing population of Chinese here, their kids and our business ties to China....a nice surprise to be number 19.

This is an excellent thread. It’s very intriguing and attracts a lot of comments. I think that nobody expected this kind of thread to be posted. I’m very happy to see “Tokyo” ranks sixth in the list now. I believe that not only Japanese people but also a lot of foreign people in Tokyo are learning Mandarin with Chinesepod.

Thanks, Hank. If I'm not wrong, does that mean that more people in Singapore know about CPOD, than -- say -- Los Angelenos (who don't even rank in your updated list even thought California appears in dark green on your map of people studying Chinese? That's really food for thought for me. Again, thanks.

Thank you for the very fast response Hank. That's a very impressive list.
I have tried to spread the word about Cpod as much as I can here in Denver. But, in general, Colorado is just too far and removed from anything Chinese. Changing this is going to be a slow and arduous process.
Your hard work is appreciated. I hope to have another beer with you and the gang sometime in the future.

@auntie68,
The rankings are based on unique visitors.
@joannah,
I don't think John has announced it yet, but they are working on a new tab for the Community section called 'Groups' that is designed to help support meetup groups like yours in Melbourne. Look for it next month!

Wow. I'm curious to know: What are the factors that make a city a "Top ChinesePod City"? Paying subscribers? Registered users (regardless of whether they are paying or not?) Daily hits from ISP addresses in those cities?
Given that the population of Singapore is only about 4.5 million (including close to 1.5 million migrant workers/ expats etc who are not citizens or Permanent Residents), it's hard to infer the reasons why Singers should be 4th ahead of NYC or LA. Especially when Hank is telling us that their main customer base is in N. America.
That said, our education system does teach "Chinese as a Second Language" as a compulsory subject in Primary and Secondary school, so this ranking may reflect a large number of Singaporeans lurking under the subscription radar because they may not need pdfs to follow CPOD (I myself lurked and dithered for nearly 3 months before buying a Basic subscription). If that's the case, then CPOD may be able to scoop up a lot of paid subscriptions if it offers just a little more in its Basic subscriptions to tempt the "heritage speakers" (hint, hint), eg. dialogue-only MP3s as a standard "Basic" feature. I can't imagine many Singaporeans who would be interested in the full "Premium" features, but an enhanced "Basic" would be tempting...

I think I'm the only one within a 100-mile radius who has even heard of CPod. I'm thinking of having a meet-up with myself this weekend...you're all invited.

RE: "Our population [of santa clara] is under 120,000. "
Santa Clara is probably just the location of the Internet Service providers in the San Franciso Bay Area....
which is about 6,000,000 million people in total.

Hi Kevin,
I'm in Parrish (east of Bradenton). So I am a south and west of you. I can't believe we didn't make the list of top Cpod cities! I can't even get around Parrish/Bradenton without using a little 普通话! And when I go to the DeSoto Speedway on Saturday night - forget it. Those people never speak 英语! (For those of you not familiar with West Central Florida, this post is meant to be dripping with sarcasm).

Chrka, yes, the University of Copenhagen offers Chinese and a couple of high schools do as well. Danish television has had a lot of focus on China as well the last year or so. I guess there must be more around than just the two of us but of course not everyone wants to participate actively.

lunetta, I'm not from Copenhagen, but not too distant either. Just across the Öresund strait (or Øresund, if you prefer =) in Malmö. With the university of Lund offering Chinese and (I assume) the university of Copenhagen, I would suspect that there could be quite a few listeners in the region.

Where are all you Hong Kong people? Let's meet somewhere to practice! Soho or Lan Kwai Fung? We could do C-pod happy hour or a Starbucks coffee hour.

September 01, 2007 at 06:58 AMchief plumber, are these all users contributing to these conversations or only paying subscribers? also, are there CPUGs (user groups) in those places, is CPod supporting them or trying to encourage setting them up? I often go to London and will soon be visiting to Shanghai, I'd be interested to know of regular meetings there. Not surprisingly, where I live is not listed, but it turns out of my colleagues in Basel, Switzerland is also a CPoddie, he found out about me through tis forum and we met this week - hi Nitrox ! (we work for the same company, we don't actually work together, those close colleagues do know who to go to when sth comes out of the printer with all these squiggles :-) they don't ask whether it's Japanese or Chinese anymore

Because there are many foreigners living and working or studying within China that have a great interest in becoming functional in the society they live in. Most of the foreigners I know here (Shenzhen) know about and listen to CP casually - and a handful are subscribers. Hank, any chance we could get some approximate numbers on these cities?
