January 25, 2010 at 12:06 PMI have questions on the following words:
05:49
大我也是,等一下咱们可以讨论一下 ...
What is this 大 here?
06:45
但是这个度好像有的时候会有点难把握,啊。
这个‘度’是‘程度’的意思?
09:39
日本人也特别喜欢玩词语。在以前日本就是艺妓--最受欢迎的艺妓不是长得最美的艺妓,而是她会玩词语,会弄词--这种艺妓是最受欢迎的。
玩词语 - play with words, play word games, 是吗?
会弄词 - skilled at playing with words, 是吗?
10:31
你冷笑话说出好像就冷场了,对吧,底下人没有什么反应。
底下人一般是 subjects 或者 people working under you 的意思吧,在这里呢?
11:57
然后再设试着与他交谈。
设试我在词典找不到。是 attempt 的意思吗?
谢谢!

8:28 - 对。早就怎么怎么了。那这里早就想买了。就说"他一直很想买这个包"。Is it 就 ?
I think it's 就是说. Jenny says this often. "that is to say", "what that means is"
8:57 - 经常迟到。你就早就到了。Again, not sure if it is 就.
Sounds to me like 加, but doesn't make sense to me that way.
11:53 - 我觉得____。消费者就是consumers来说是骗人的。
我觉得从消费者,就是 consumers,的角度来说,是骗人的。
(speaking) from the consumers' perspective,
12:13 - 因为, as jckeith says.
12:22 - 不过我觉得每年就是______, 比如圣诞节啊,还有中国春节过年的时候大家还是很任意被骗的。是买点东西嘛。
You haven't missed anything, where the blank is.
大家还是很愿意被骗的。是买点东西嘛。
12:42 - 在中国我想在美国___一样吧。
也 is right.
12:47 - 好,那今天 ____ 商场搞活动。
今天这一课呢,商场搞活动。

January 24, 2010 at 6:26 PMSuxiaoya don't you find it even more difficult to write on those whiteboards, being left-handed? I hate it, always needing to bend and scrunch up and keep from wiping away what I've just written, with my own hand.

January 24, 2010 at 6:14 PMNo doubt it's disadvantageous to be left-handed in brush calligraphy--in writing kanji/hanzi in general, as they were not designed to be written with the left hand. Try it and see how your arm comes in on your heart with every horizontal stroke. It is a stressor I think. I'm left-handed btw.
Japanese children used to be corrected into right-handedness I think even when I was growing up (I didn't go to Japanese school so the issue didn't come up at school. At home my father did try to get me to use chopsticks with the right hand but it was too late, I was already eight then), but I guess not much these days. Don't know the statistics, but I do see many more young left-handed people now than I did say 20, 30 years ago. Changye I think many parents now also think it's "cool" for their kid to be left-handed, and if you're one of those parents keen for your kid to become a baseball or tennis player or something, even more so.
I don't know what it's like in China so am looking forward to the lesson. The only glimpse of any attitude I've had was from a young teacher who saw me and said "Wow!", as if I had ridden into the classroom on a unicycle.

January 23, 2010 at 6:57 PM1) sorry, I don't know about this either.
2) 看一个人是什么星座的,我们可以知道他的 personality。
roughly translates as "By seeing (when we see) what sign a person is, we can know something about his personality"
3) 那种 is right.
4) 对。很有能力。那通常我们都是想他工作很有能力
(if we heard that,) we would usuallly think that meant (he is) "capable at work"
5) the advice the girl gives 乔飞 Qiao2 Fei1, the boy in the dialogue (John gives us the name at the top of the lesson).
6) 对。金牛座。好,那狮子座和金牛座,它(他?)们好像有点问题啊。 it sounds like ...
7) 其实它就是有种 is correct.
I think of it as '其实它就是有一种'.
8) 那我们现在已经听到了狮子座和金牛座。
Hope that helps.

January 23, 2010 at 2:08 PMChangye 我第一次听到‘恐龙’这个用法是在 CPod 这篇课程里:
http://chinesepod.com/lessons/a-fated-meeting?page=1
Jenny 和 John 从 04:00 开始给我们介绍一下这个来自网络上的新词语。所以 Connie 老师在这里用得才不恰当呢!
Changye the first time I heard this use of '恐龙' was in this CPod lesson (Intermediate - A Fated Meeting).
Jenny and John explain this new term from Internet slang starting at 04:00. So, the way Connie uses it here is so very inappropriate isn't it!

January 23, 2010 at 10:40 AM我真无法理解你说那样 Connie!难道‘恐龙’的意思是‘很可爱的一个女孩儿’吗? 我们 poddies 会误解吧!
天下所有的女人有这一个永远不变的愿望(无论年龄多大,不管结婚没有)——要变得更漂亮。你也是吧 ☆彡
(rough translation)
I cannot believe you said that Connie! You'll get poddies confused on the meaning of 恐龙; do you want us learn it as "adorable girl"?
All women (no matter what age, whether married or not) have an eternal, abiding wish--to become even more beautiful. You too, right!

January 20, 2010 at 6:30 AM非常感谢 Jiaojie 老师!真是给你添麻烦了。其实结果和我的预料有点相反,听错的地方比较少,放了心。
我注意到,在这篇课里 Jenny 好几次说‘觉~’,这是跟‘觉得~’完全一样吗?或者说的其实就是‘觉得’?
