June 11, 2010 at 4:07 PMHi I made this post in the 中文吧 Group. 中文吧 Zhōngwén bā ("Chinese hangout") is a zone reserved for communication in Chinese only. We go there to practice, not allowing ourselves to fall back on English even when we find it a bit tough to express ourselves. Once in 中文吧, we make ourselves stick to Chinese. Tough--but fun!
I'm going to put the English translation of this post below. Hope to get those of you who have maybe joined the Group but have never participated, or found an all-Chinese environment a bit too intimidating, to come and leave a short comment there. Sometimes in 中文吧 we end up talking about more complex subjects like "what good does a royal family do for a country"(!), but there are a lot of relatively simple things we can chat about and it would be nice to start doing that more. Please do come up and take a look anyway. And do join in! Only simple questions are asked in this post, so responses don't even have to be complete sentences. See you there! Cheers

** I think for this time we should be allowed to write out any player names in roman letters if it's too hard to look up how to write them in hanzi. I'd rather people felt inclined to go up there and talk! Country names are all there on the BBC web page I linked to!

The BBC link is just a World Cup page, showing all the countries by group and overviews of each team (simplified Chinese). It's too bad if anyone in China studying Chinese and interested in the World Cup would be denied access to this page.
P.S. At least two of the North Korean players are born-and-raised-in-Japan Korean (one of them, their ace striker said--I don't really understand this--he has South Korean citizenship, but his allegiance is with 朝鲜 Chao2xian3), playing in the J League. Look out for 鄭大世 Zheng4 Da4shi4 (Jung Daese). These guys aren't starving. They're hungry though.

我一边跑步，一边学中文。 I've been doing a bit of racing and a little studying Chinese.--As Tal has said, this should be "running" or "jogging", not "racing".

June 8, 2010 at 10:22 AM视频很好看！ I know Shibuya 渋谷 has been made to look attractive in commercials and promo videos sometimes. Pretty hard to see it that way though on the ground, as a resident (I don't live in Shibuya but I'm not a visitor there either). Thanks for sharing this.

I guess in Chinese that would be 支持日本队 zhīchí Rìběn duì, or in reference to the actual act of cheering vocally, 声援日本队 shēngyuán Rìběn duì.
Language is not the area I'm concerned about re cultural colonization! Japanese is not in any such danger as far as I can see.
