Japanese women don't like getting 晒黑 either! John must be talking about those gan-gro's (link courtesy of Kimiik). That was an aberration.
But Chinese women do seem much more intent than us about avoiding the rays. After class one summer day we were all walking to lunch. My teacher (20's, fair-skinned) singled me out and said "Aren't you concerned? You're getting all this sun." because I wasn't wearing a hat or using a 伞. She had a black parasol. I assured her I don't leave the house in the daytime before applying 防晒霜 (on face, hands, arms and neck) first. But she didn't seem convinced I was doing enough, seemed genuinely puzzled at my nonchalance.
Actually I am very well-equipped regarding anti-UV gear. I have a huge sun visor, foldable hat, 太阳镜 (word was one year that perceiving the strong rays through your eyes tells your brain you need to produce melanin quickly), collapsible 阳伞 yángsǎn that doubles as 雨伞 yǔsǎn, three pairs of fingerless gloves (long, short, lightweight), five SPF30 (and 40) patagonia shirts. I just get lazy about using them sometimes. But when I bring the laundry in in about an hour I will put on gloves and visor at least.

John: 对。
Jenny: ......
John:

01:07
John:
John:
Jenny: ......

John:
Jenny:
John :

John:
John:
Jenny:

05:32
John :

07:53
Jenny:
World Series ......
John: Oh, league.
Jenny: 不同的,soccer leagues。

08:24

John:

09:30
John:

John: Ah.

10:23
Jenny:

John:

13:24
John:
Just for fun,对吧。
John:
Jenny: 你没有事情做得 ~ your own time
John:

Hopefully three hours from now our guys will have shown us they're tough enough after all and that being short is not a fatal shortcoming. My fingers are crossed.

BTW I really wish this conversation was being picked up as a Related Conversation ... couldn't it like be manually added perhaps?

Yep and that's only true for those tough enough to not give up till the end.

Well deserved!

FYI there is an Upper Inter lesson (from 2006). It doesn't go deep into terminology but Supplementary Vocab does have Red Card and Yellow Card. Actually, some of the English translations of those terms should probably be revised ...

I hope the US get through to the next round. They have a bunch of talented players and a great, never-die attitude (they're always that way though come to think of it. and they're playing without the fervent support from home many other teams have!). Would enjoy seeing them go far.

Japan tough? What they are is boring me out of my mind (they have to be by far the most boring team in this 世界杯, though I suppose it will be worth it if they're able to advance as I said to Changye some days ago). But somebody there needs to remember you're supposed to try to take some serious shots on goal during games!

France and Italy (England too probably, though I like their array of talent much better) are big names but aging teams that had their best chances years ago when their major stars were shining brightest, not now. They're veteran players, coming off hard seasons, exhausted, injured. Not at all surprising that they should struggle.

I do hope a couple of African teams make it into the next round. Ghana maybe? Looking quite difficult but I really wish Cote D'Ivoire would.

Brazil are really alone among the 32 teams; they're on a different plane. Doesn't mean they'll win though. The World Cup isn't about finding out who's the best team of soccer players right? It's just about playing to see who wins it!

* England played to win like they had to today. And looks like the US won in the dying minutes. Great games. OK and I take that back about England with their best chances in the past. Two exciting teams going onto the next round. *

John we've been talking about it now for two weeks, in the Elementary World Cup and Diamonds lesson (205 comments!), in the News and Features, and all in Chinese here, and all in Japanese here!

And not done yet! (^v^)
