July 1, 2010 at 8:40 PMHow to say "tan lines" in Chinese? I can't find it in any of the dictionaries I'm using. The women may shun tanning like the plague but men surely have tan lines, like on their arms from their T-shirts? I really want to talk about tan lines.

July 1, 2010 at 8:10 PMoops listened to the dialogue again, had the order mixed up. The woman only has to observe that NGO guy is shy, for him to react as if deflecting admiration. "Hehe, well I'm not much of a talker." Then she makes those remarks on his assumed honest character.

June 30, 2010 at 11:52 PMBecause being shy (not being slick) is considered a sign of a 老实 character. It's no leap. The woman shows appreciation for that, and NGO guy deflects, saying "Well I'm just not the smoothest with words". I guess similar thinking exists in many cultures (as you've suggested), but it seems to me in China this shy = honest connection is pretty much a given, at least on a superficial level.

June 29, 2010 at 9:01 AMSo sorry to yammer on but I'd just like to add that this value on "fair skin" has nothing to do with racism; it's simply a preference. Japan is not as ethnically diverse as some other Asian countries; many of us are generally on the fair side to begin with. Most of the obsession with 美白 is about seeing sun and liver spots as serious blemishes.
