September 17, 2010 at 1:54 PMOr--I find this hard to tell which it is--她按了床边的铃 in order to 叫护士来. Either way I don't see the bell doing anything here; it's just being used by 她 to call the nurse (though it's understood that it rings).

September 17, 2010 at 11:35 AMSpeaking of my dictionary--useful as it is, and I do turn to it many times every day--if I learned all my Chinese from it I would be saying 把闹钟对到六点上 bǎ nàozhōng duìdào liù diǎnshang for set the alarm clock for 6:00.
Good thing I have ChinesePod: 定6点就好了！ dìng liù diǎn jiù hǎo le!

她按了床边的铃叫护士来。 tā àn le chuáng biān de líng jiào hùshì lái
叫 means to get the nurse to come. It's 她叫护士来。tā jiào hùshì lái. 按了床边的铃 is how she did that--by pushing on the bedside bell (button).
响 is probably the most natural word to use. My dictionary gives 闹钟响了。nàozhōng xiǎngle for The (clock) alarm is going off. Same thing for the cel phone rings. 手机响了。shǒujī xiǎngle

Yeah "noisy clock" is great, I love it. So would you refer to the alarm function on your cell phone as 手机的闹钟功能 shǒujī de nàozhōng gōngnéng?
