You know it's funny because just today on my drive in to work, I was doing the expansion exercises for this lesson and kept thinking, "wow these expansion sentences are really useful, give alot of great supplimentary vocabulary and are really well written".
I think we should all give a loud and proud shout out to Jiao Jie and Connie!

October 23, 2008 at 6:19 AMI have to totally agree with you about Peter's chronic tone problems, not to mention pronunciation problems, when he said, 我才不怕你 the 才 was forth tone, and spoken very 不标准的. Consequently when I first heard it, I swear he said something else...a VERY bad word...

其实听 Jeff 说话就是一种过去回忆的唤醒。我好久没听到他那个人的声音。我知道他很久就离开了 Praxis 但我很好奇，这个 Jeff 为什么要从 Chinesepod.com 这么快就辞职呢？难道是他主动的行动而离开了 Cpod 吗？ 还是他被炒鱿鱼了？是不是因为他个性和声音方式都太呆板了，一听他说话就听腻了，所以他失老板和听众的宠呢？事实上我不好意思探听人家的私事，但我觉得因为 Jeff 已经这么久没在 Praxis 工作所以我觉得可以问这个问题，没有关系。

Actually I don't agree with much of what John said in his Sinosplice blog. http://www.sinosplice.com/life/archives/2008/06/25/learning-curves-chinese-vs-japanese I do agree with Maxiwawa (by the way it's been a LONG time since we've heard from him), that because John started studying Japanese first, that's clearly the reason why Japanese starts out so difficult in his graph. I, having also started studying Japanese first (also the first language I ever studied) I had no idea HOW to study. What I mean is, since everything was so new to me, I had no concept of what I needed to do to study effectively. I had no road map. All I had was an endless patch of weeds, taller than men themselves, and had to use a machete to hack out my own path, as it were. Once I began studying Chinese, I already had a well worn path to follow, and I was much more aware of the pitfalls of language learning and could make my overall study plan much more effective. I will agree that Chinese grammar is easier than Japanese, and that Chinese pronunciation is much harder than Japanese, but that's not to say that either are EASY. I never felt, as John apparently did, that once you learn vocabulary items in Chinese, you can simply just start "parsing out the words". Really you can do that with any language, just learn words and start saying them. Start stringing together sentences, it doesn't mean that they will be intelligible.
