When I hear Mandarin, I can understand a little. When I hear Cantonese, it not only _sounds_ completely different, I can't understand anything. Giving me 3 examples of words that are the same is ludicrous. they may have at one time been dialects, but these days they're pretty dichotonous.
As other said, can a mandarin-only speaker understand a cantonese-only speaker? No. So there you go.
