Hmn. So the use of 变化 (bian4hua4) to talk about a change. All three examples use a modifier before 大 (da1) - 变化很大, 变化真大. Very big, and really big. How about just a big change? Is it:

变化大

or

大的变化

谢谢

In which case, I shall indulge in a little schadenfreude, and wish you luck. *thumbs up* :-)

Hehe. Love it.

Just because I'm curious, I thought I'd annoy my girlfriend (who speaks both) by ringing her in the middle of her training day. I asked her, could someone who only speaks cantonese, understand a speaker of mandarin? She said, "A little bit. Depends how old they are".

So there, non-conclusively, you are.

Shiina Ringo is a fantastic Japanese singer. Also sings with a band called Tokyo Jihen.

Oh sorry, in the UK at least. And I've seen it used on the english speaking internet - news sites, so on and so forth.

On that point, Japanese and Cantonese use the same basic writing script, definitely not the same language!

Zeitgeist is pretty common. But only amongst the more verbose ;-)

I heard a story that that's why spanish speakers find it easier to learn Japanese, although the rolling R is quite rare? My favourite singer is thought to be quite unusual because she tends to roll her R's (Shiina Ringo).

Or am I misinformed?
