Ellen, I'm finding these messages really hard to understand! The slang you're using (ham and cigarette - bullet and gun, and the hairy-legged son in law), are these Shanghai specific? I asked my girlfriend if she'd heard of them, and she's similarly confused!

That's really interesting dunderklumpen, thank you. Also quite confusing!

So in the first example, 我还是要买, is that an alternative to 仍?

And the second example seems to be a seperate usage, almost a replacement for 应该。 Is there any difference?

Oh, that's made it really clear. So it's used in conclusion to compare something favourably to the previous statement. Thanks so much Helen! 多谢!

I even wrote it wrong. 还是 。。。好 is what it is.

This is the first time I've come across the 还是好了 construction. I'm a bit unclear how it could be used, is it possible to ask for a few more examples of its use please? The only place I've seen 还是 before has been in the "or" context. 这个还是那个。。。

很有用!我经常吃豆腐... 不要不好意思了

hēnyǒuyòng! wǒjīngchángchīdòufu... bùyàobùhǎoyīsìle

Very useful! I often eat Tofu - don't want to be embarassed! (at least, that's what I'm trying to say...)

They'll probably be added as a new "series", and I think you can add them independently.

Also, loved Jenny forcing Sarah to practice Shanghai dialect in the podcast! Were you expecting that? Very funny, you sounded suddenly panicked :-)
