The print of this is so small on the characters that it is almost impossible to read. For example, how are you able to read the character, ca1?

在北京别人说，我说汉语不错。在上海，别人说，你说“儿”太多。我觉得我的老师是北房的人！可是我不知道。

Nice lesson although a bit easy, particularly the Exercises.

Perhaps as a suggestion: on the Expansion have the sentences read in the different dialects and then use  the Exercises to determine what the content of read sentences are. The standard format here doesn't not do justice to this lesson.

Uncle Changye, For several months, I have really admired your poetic and structural use of characters. How do you do it? Do you use a word editor and set up several sentences and then reorganize them for their visual effect? Of course, I assume that you are fluent with characters. I understand that you are Japanese or have a Japanese lanuguage background. But your comments over that past few months are really an art form. Thank you for the pleasure and aethestics. Walt

On this last trip to China, I did bring my GPS to China and used it successfully. I had no problem with it whether I was in Shanghai, Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Wuhan or in outlying regions. It was really useful in Wuhan as I rarely knew where I was or could tell where I was. In fact, one day we had a driver that got lost ... the GPS was able to put us back on track.

Cool segment! I really like the explanation of all the policement that I have seen. I have a story... Last April in Chengdu, I had the Director of our Hospital Emergency Services with me as I was linking him up with the Sichuan University Hospital people. We were in a car with a professional driver moving down a crowded four lane (two in each direction) street in the right hand most lane. I told the driver that he missed the road to our next appointment. He immediately does a U-turn, across the left hand lane in front of other cars and comes head to head with a police car in the opposite left lane. That car slows and he pulls right in front of the police car. The Doctor with me then says, "I now have seen everything: We play chicken with a policeman and win!" I often wondered what the various policemen in China do ... as far as I can tell, nothing.

A tip for someone going to China for the first time or even the second time: Program into your cell phone the number of someone who is Chinese that you can get a hold of reliably. There will come times when you will give instructions to a taxi driver and he will not understand you. And you will not understand what he is saying either. By having the number in your cell phone, you can call that person and give the phone to the driver. While I never had to use this, I have seen others use it to advantage. Another tip that I have used: If you are going by taxi to a location where you have never been, have the phone number of someone at your destination that can be called. I did this when I visited Shanghai Jiaotong University in Minhang. We got to the university fine on my instructions to the driver but the driver (and I) missed the gate that we were supposed to meet my friend. After driving a kilometer past the university, I stopped the driver and called my friend. On the second time back, we missed it yet again. On the second call, I kept my friend on the line while we navigated to the correct location. Places in China can be very confusing if you have never seen them before. A cell phone can save a lot of frustration and time.
