September 26, 2011 at 12:17 PMI have found that when a Chinese person tells that "we don't say that" that means that the place in which he/she comes from doesn't use that. For example, 脑筋急转弯，I was once told no one says that. Maybe no one says it, but I encounter it all of the time in novels. I was also told once that 谁's pinyin was shui not shei. In addition, there is a descrepancy between Northerners and Southerners in their use of 你 and 您。What is particularly interesting is how little the Chinese know about these linguistic differences between them. China is a big place, what's said in one place may or may not be said in another.
There is a wealth of possibilities for anyone wanting to do research on socio-linguistics in China. Moreover there is a great need for this type of research to be done.
