October 30, 2007 at 8:18 PMIf we're on about strange old wives tales involving air conditioning, has anyone else heard the one about not *sleeping* beneath an electric fan (电扇)? I've only heard this a few times in China (its not nearly as pervasive as the universal horror one faces braving a light drizzle sans umbrella), but some of my Korean friends claim they get it all the time. @clay - I'll get my Ayi to whip up a nice batch of warm Tang for our next office football match. 38.7 degrees of pure refreshment on a hot summer's day.

Although I think it was Bazza that added the "Higgs Boson particle". >> Of course it didn't harm that I've seen this movie a thousand times.<< I used to have the English copy of this on VHS. This version was the Director's Cut, and came with about 20 minutes of extra footage. It was noticeably longer and better, Lunetta. Might want to grab it if you find a used copy.

I notice more confusion around water. @oliben -- I use fuwuyuan all the time. "xiaojie" sometimes means "prostitute", so there's the potential to offend, although you still hear it all the time.

November 4, 2007 at 4:01 AMPaging Amber... paging Amber.... On a language note, I really like this 有 X 有 Y way of expressing "both". For me it's going up there with Verb+死+了+死+了.... 累死了又死了又死了有死了.... Picked that up from a university student in Beijing. Not sure if it makes me sound female, but I like using it.
