August 10, 2007 at 5:13 AM@h4rrydog, We're planning on making the dictionary content available in a few forms and the licensing clause is basically to ensure we have the permission to do that. I don't think we've thought over how distribution will happen with the dictionary. We use creative commons for the podcasts and will take a look at it for the dictionary materials.

Right now the dictionary is a database of definitions and a reverse-word index linking individual words to sentences and related lessons. This makes it possible for a search to pull up definitions in related lessons without those definitions appearing in the dictionary. (it's also why the pinyin fix for the definitions search has not yet affected the sample lessons search, as Phil noted on the blog - I need to regenerate the second index with a "toneless pinyin field"). We're working on integrating the "lesson production system" (read: John) more deeply into the dictionary. When this is done the academic team will be able to push content directly into the database as we produce lessons, so that it is always up-to-date, instead of lagging a bit behind as it is right now.

August 6, 2007 at 8:16 AMUPDATE: traditional and non-tonal pinyin search should work now. @Bazza - IT isn't in as the entry doesn't fit well with the current indexing system (begins with roman content). Will need to make some technical changes to support entries that begin with roman letters.

August 16, 2007 at 8:25 PM西北偏北 should mean "slightly" (偏) north of northwest. A genuinely solid chinese translation. Just to be judgmental, I think Vertigo is excellent, but I'm not terribly fond of this one. Cary Grant was much better in "My Girl Friday" and the crop duster scene is over-the-top. It was the combination of John letting slip that this was a "film classic" coupled with the train scene gave it away for me. I'm back at the helm next week, and am pleased to trade this sort of emotional subtlety for more uncomplicated visual explosions. Congrats to the Doc for getting this though. Definitely not an easy pick by John.
