July 24, 2011 at 3:49 PMAs a practitioner of Chinese Medicine, 中医, in the U.S. I often deal with a great amount of culture clash when either prescribing herbs or dietary suggestions. I have actually prescribed earthworms in some of my herbal prescriptions for arthritic pain and other conditions such as COPD, 慢性阻塞行非疾病。
As far as the difference between Chinese folk medicine and 中医 I think they are connected but also differ greatly. The main difference would be that 中医 is based on a very complicated system of diagnosis determined to identify a root cause within the internal organs systems, whereas folk remedies tend to be symptomatic treatments not concerned with a diagnosis but rather a remedy for the immediate ailment.
The Chinese Medicine herbal name for the earth worm is 地龙。 Kind of makes it sound grander than it actually is.
